MOREY SAINT DENIS

2017 1er Cru Les Chenevery Domaine Lignier-Michelot

EN PRIMEUR

80% Whole Bunch, What a magnificent opening. Great weight of liquid fruit. Intensely flavoured and getting darker in the mouth. Nicely restrained mineral heft builds here. This is heady. Aromatics soar and there is such drive and power. Lots of spice and plum flesh followed by acidity that keeps it juicy and energetic. So alive. Drinking range: 2020 - 2027L&S (Nov 2018)

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chenevery 1er Cru has the simplest bouquet of Virgile Lignier’s 2017s that I tasted from bottle, perhaps going though some post-bottling dumb phase; touches of rose petal emerge with time. The palate is marked by grainy tannins, quite compact and dense, leading to a grippy, serious and saline finish. It just needs time in bottle. Drinking range: 2024 - 2042 Rating: 92+ Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

(70% whole cluster). Discreet but not invisible wood and menthol influences set off the much riper aromas of cassis, plum, black raspberry and game. There is excellent intensity to the mineral-driven and overtly powerful middle weight plus flavors that offer excellent depth and persistence on the firmly structured finale. This is really quite good and worth checking out provided you cellar it for at least 5 to 7 years first. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chenevery 1er Cru, matured with 70% whole bunch fruit, has a more open bouquet than the Faconnières. Flinty, almost charcoal-like aromas filter through the black fruit. The palate is well balanced with some of the finest tannins from the _ domaine_, full of tension and lighter on its feet than the Faconnières, with a more elegant and refined finish if not quite the same complexity. Drinking range: 2022 - 2037 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.

For more details on the terms and fees associated with storage please go to our Storage Homepage or contact our primeurs team for more information.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
