Sweetly scented and slightly exotic, the 2017 Rosso Peloro impresses with a display of ripe cherries, blueberry skins, lavender and wet stone. It’s silky and textured, carried by vibrant acidity, as mineral-tinged black fruits cascade across the palate. Cheek-puckering tension lingers, along with tart wild berries and hints of salted licorice. This blend of 70% Nerello Mascalese and 30% Nocera aims to please, yet it does so with admirable balance and poise. Drinking range: 2021 - 2025 Rating: 91 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

A stunning pair of wines (with the 2017 FARO Rosso DOC Le Casematte) north-east coast of Sicily based on the Etna grapes Nerello plus the local Nocera. This one is a real charmer, aged for six months in old oak, while Le Casematte 2017 Faro is a little more serious. Both are distinctively savoury, impressively persistent and reasonably priced for the quality.Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

Gorgeous lifted nose of sour cherry, tamarind, dark spice and earth. Succulent fruit palate with soft, rustic tannins. Charmingly walks the line between polished Pinot Noir and softer Rhone-like reds. This is a great, sophisticated everyday wine with real character from an enchanting corner of Sicily. Etna charm at half the price! Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

Le Casematte

There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
