Fuligni makes very evocative wines. In this, a rich tapestry of flavours from old saddle leather to red and black cherries and dusts recalls Tuscany with every sip. You don’t need to bring in the rib of beef to enjoy it; a glass of this will make a feast of a bowl of pasta. Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Nov 2020)

Deep minerally/earthy cherry nose. Succulent cherry fruit on the palate with long, coating tannins. Just a touch of creaminess on the finish, which could betray oak. It's not exactly a bargain but is worth every penny. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 17+ Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Apr 2020)

The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto is a joyous wine that captures all the richness of the vintage. Ample, creamy yet translucent, the 2017 is super-expressive today. Ripe red cherry, orange zest, plum, licorice, mint and sweet floral notes all flesh out effortlessly. Soft curves and pliant fruit add to the wine's sheer appeal. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Together with his aunt, Roberto makes the wines with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini and his son Jacopo, while agronomist Federico Ricci looks after the vineyards.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 25 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. 4 plots, Semiti, San Giovanni, Ginestreto and Cotimeli produce Sangiovese for the Brunelli and Rosso and each vineyard is kept separate during fermentation. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (12-30 plus) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
