Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion

Beau-Séjour Bécot is now working with top Bordeaux oenologist Thomas Duclos and you can certainly sense freshness and tension in this excellent 2018. The blackberry and dark cherry fruit has an appetising juicy feel and none of the stewed character you find in quite a few Right Bank wines from 2018. The texture on the mid-palate is very well-judged too. There's a nice sheen and satin weight. The tannins fuse with the rich fruit beautifully. This is a very refined Saint Emilion with excellent freshness and energy. It's one of the best wines we can remember tasting en primeur from this estate and definitely one to keep a sharp eye on. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 L&S (Apr 2019)

The first vintage to be entirely overseen by Juliet Bécot, ann the sculpting of style that she has introduced can be seen here. A mix of amphorae, 20hl Stockinger casks and 225l barrels used for the ageing Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2021)

The 2018 Beau-Séjour Bécot is nicely detailed on the nose of pixelated black fruit laced with raspberry and subtle floral scents; back notes of marmalade come through with aeration. The pliant palate is medium-bodied with luscious tannins disguising the structure behind this Saint-Émilion. I suspect that it might close up for a period before blossoming with bottle age. This is a sophisticated and very well-crafted wine that will age with style and panache. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Beau-Séjour Bécot has really closed down since I tasted it en primeur. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and blood orange gradually open in the glass, all framed by veins of chalky minerality. The 2018 is a fabulous wine in the making, but readers have to be patient. Time in a decanter or simply in the glass helps to bring out the wine's considerable depth. Drinking range: 2026 - 2043 Rating: 96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Château Beau Séjour Bécot sits on the slopes above Château Angelus, half a mile west of the town of St Emilion. It was once part of a larger Château Beauséjour estate which was owned by the de Carle family who owned Château Figeac. After a couple of changes of ownership, the estate was divided in 1869 between the children of Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe - his daughter's share became Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse, whilst his son's, eventually, became Château Beau Séjour Bécot. The Bécot part of the name only became attached in 1969 when Michel Bécot bought the estate, and the Bécot family own it to this day. The controversial addition to Beau Séjour Bécot of some other vineyards owned by the Bécot family, an addition which nearly doubled the size of the estate, led to its demotion from Premier Grand Cru Classé status to "only" Grand Cru Classé status in 1979. Relentless work to prove that the new larger estate was as good, if not better, than before paid off in 1996 when Château Beau Séjour Bécot was re-elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. The vineyards are a fairly typical mix of 70% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation is in mostly new oak.
