CHÂTEAU CAMBON LA PELOUSE

2018 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
ABV 13%

We might be biased towards this cracking Haut Médoc but it seems to perform in every vintage. So it is no surprise we loved it in 2018. Brambly nose. Plenty of Cabernet fruit on the palate. Tightly focused dark berries and green pepper blend together well. Mineral edge to the juice. The structure is more polished than in previous vintages. Marvellous. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2018 Cambon de Palouse shows signs of greenness on the nose, perhaps more so than when I tasted it from barrel. The palate is hard on the entry and quite austere, with a dry woody finish. I reckon the fruit will fade long before the rather aggressive tannins. Tasted twice. Drinking range: 2021 - 2024 Rating: 83 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Black currant, ash, black-olive and dried-herb aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with powdery, fine-grained tannins. Drink or hold. Rating: 90 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jan 2021)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cambon la Pelouse is scented of cedar, tar and earth with a core of warm plums and cassis with mocha and lavender hints. The palate is full-bodied, firm and laden with fruit, supported by grainy tannins and finishing long. Rating: 90-92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2019)

Château Cambon la Pelouse

One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
