A blend of 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Moulin Saint-Georges comes from a vineyard just down the slope from Ausone, on the southern side of the village of Saint-Émilion. It’s a beautiful wine that has a smoky, dark-fruited style as well as notes of crushed rocks, white truffle, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and lightly textured on the palate, it shines for both its complexity and elegance, and will drink nicely for two decades or more. Black core. Dark-fruited with ripe cassis, spicy. Juicy and fresh on the palate, packed with fruit and nicely smooth tannins even though they are powerful. Juicier and fresher than the Ch Simard. Blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges is deep purple-black colored and opens slowly to display notions of sautéed herbs, menthol and pencil shavings over a core of chocolate-covered cherries, baked plums and cedar plus a waft of potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with lively, juicy fruit framed by plush tannins and finishes with a floral skip in its step. The alcohols are a touch higher than usual here, as at Ausone, but it retains an excellent fresh feel. This is always my wine to buy from the Vauthier lineup for the 95% of us who can't afford Ausone, and here again it is gorgeous, with the most perfect line of sight to the generous black fruits, showing sapidity and juice. 100% new oak. This is 80% Merlot picked September 28th and October 1st, and 20% Cabernet Franc picked October 9th. There is dark and lightly roasted black cherry stone on the nose, wrapped up in dried cherry skin, a very savoury style of fruit, coming with notes of praline and peppered oak. The palate is pure, precise, tightly drawn, showing a more plateau-like structure than Simard and Haut-Simard tasted alongside. There is a convincing limestone grip to the tannins, which feel ripe and cashmere-like, so elegantly placed in the very centre of the wine. Poised, bright and classic, this is a fine success.
