80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. The vines have an average age of 31 years and are grown on the limestone slopes to the south of Saint Emilion. Mineral nose of crushed rocks. Lots of rich juice on entry. Dark and voluptuous. Fine tannins are noticeable but the flow isn't interrupted. Lots of fun. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 L&S (Apr 2019)

This estate couldn't be considered for the St Emilion classification, as Château Fonbel is made in the same cellar - even if its sibling estate Ausone wanted to still be part of the ranking - but no question that it is equal in quality to the vast majority of classified St Emilion properties. This vintage is a brilliant example of why, and although it needs another four or five years in bottle, you can already sink into the sappy blueberry and raspberry fruits with edges of tobacco, rose petal, crushed stones and slate. 3.4ph. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2021)

The 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges has a broody, introspective bouquet, so I allowed it 90–120 minutes to open. It reveals enticing blackberry, seaweed and light graphite notes with aeration, perhaps a little more sophisticated than recent vintages of the Vauthier family’s estate. The immediate impression on the palate is the texture, which is satin-like and very harmonious. Veins of blue fruit infuse the black, and blood orange surfaces toward the finish, which is almost Burgundy in style. A wonderful Moulin Saint-Georges that will be difficult to resist. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

A tight and structured red with plum, mineral, cedar and hints of sweet tobacco. It’s medium to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a juicy finish. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Mar 2021)

Château Moulin Saint Georges

Owned by Alain Vauthier, Château Moulin Saint Georges is situated in Saint-Emilion and covers 7 hectares. The vineyards are well sited on the south-west facing 'Pavie' slope. The average age of the vines on this slope is 26 years old, and they are planted at a density of 6500 vines/hectare. Vauthier believes that the quality of his wine is a direct result of how well the vines are tended to, therefore yields are kept extremely low in order to concentrate the flavour, and all grapes are hand-harvested to ensure only the best grapes are used in production.
