CHÂTEAU SÉNÉJAC

2018 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
ABV 14%

59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29%, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot. Yields at 38hl/ha. It spends 15 months in oak, with 30% new barrels. This property has come on leaps and bounds since it became part of the Bignon-Cordier (Château Talbot) stable in 1999. It now makes some excellent value claret in a classically shaped style that's focused on freshness and drinkability. The 2018 has those qualities but it also has some extra ripeness and weight from the warmth of the vintage. There's juicy, soft red and black fruit, a creamy mid-palate, and good verve running through it all. Relatively lightly structured for a 2018, it's a very charming claret that will be hugely enjoyable in its youth and capable of lasting a decade in the cellar. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 L&S (Apr 2019)

Blackcurrant, blackberry, herbal and earthy undertones. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins and structure. Savory and layered on the palate. Rich finish. Chewy. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Sénéjac has an attractive bouquet of blackberry and raspberry fruits, touches of graphite and pressed flowers. I admire the precision of this Haut-Médoc. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, well-judged new oak (25%) and a touch of dark chocolate toward the finish. This has real panache and class and comes highly recommended. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2019)

Barrel sample. Deepest crimson. Dark fruit and crushed rocks. Pure cassis intensity. Quite strict on the palate, the tannins upright and clean-cut giving a restraint that some wines lack in this vintage. Spicy, rounded on the finish. Harmonious and should be approachable early. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Château Sénéjac

So far south in the Haut-Médoc that it exists in splendid isolation, without vineyard neighbours, in the tiny settlement of Le Pian Médoc, is Château Sénéjac. The usual Bordelais long complicated history is crowned by the purchase of Sénéjac in 1999 by Lorraine Cordier, owner of Château Talbot. Since Lorraine’s death, Sénéjac has been managed by her sister Nancy Bignon Cordier with operations overseen by Alfred Tesseron and his team from Château Pontet Canet. There are 39ha of vineyard, in a single block, planted with 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, with an average age of 35 years. The wines of Château Sénéjac offer splendid value and relatively early appeal.
