DAMASCENE

2018 Syrah Stellenbosch

Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin South Africa, Stellenbosch
Other Practising Organic
Village Stellenbosch
ABV 13.5%

The freshness of this Syrah is so impressive, beautiful concentration, with dark fruit, plum and blackberry, ground pepper and spice. Richly tannic, overlaid with wild herbs, black fruit and spice, the acidity gives a cracking line to the palate. This is a wonderfully sculpted mouthful of prime Syrah, that will give pleasure over the next decade at least. L&S (Jul 2020)

A new label brought out by Jean Smit, former winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof. Aromatically this is disarmingly lovely: violet, rose and cedar-box lift. Only just medium-bodied but has real presence and intensity on the palate-it's electric! The tannins are fine yet intensely grippy, the acidity is sizzling and there's a saline touch which adds interest. A wine of great textural wealth and aromatic freshness- exciting to taste. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 96 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Oct 2020)

Mid crimson. Very obviously salty-sweet Syrah on the nose. Not northern Rhône but very gently-made non-European Syrah (and definitely not Shiraz). Well done! Flatteringly accessible. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2020)

A combination of Polkadraai and Bottelary grapes, winemaking involving multiple fermentations. A compelling nose of red and black berries, black pepper, fynbos, incense and wilted rose. The palate is rich and dense in the best way – intense but not weighty, this has great freshness and lovely ripe tannins in addition to impressive fruit. Super detail and energy, this immediately places among the best in the country. Rating: 97 www.winemag.co.za (Apr 2020)

Damascene

Damascene is a seriously exciting new find for us in South Africa. Their maiden vintage here was 2018 and we were blown away by the results. 2019, their second vintage was sold out on release, read the press release HERE.

The highly acclaimed Jean Smit, previously winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof, has teamed up with David Curl, former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby.

Their goal is to explore all across the South African winelands in search of exceptional sites. Sites that deliver an important moment of insight, and hence the name of the project. A Damascene moment of clarity, where we can all understand the greatness of these small, prized plots.

The vineyards are old and well established but small, so each of these brilliant wines is only released in very small quantities. We urge you to catch them while you can.

This wine isn't currently part of a mixed case, but you can always browse our full selection of mixed cases here.
