DELICIOSA MANZANILLA

2018 En Rama Valdespino

Origin Spain, Sherry
ABV 15%

This comes from the Miraflores vineyard. And the barrels have spent an average of seven years in the bodega. A very light filtration takes out any solid matter but this is not fined nor stabilised. Bottled in May 2018. This is slightly darker and more intense than the Tio Pepe, and a tad firmer than the La Gitana. Super-charged and full of yeasty umami character and an uncanny salty marine tang - that Manzanilla essence is deep here. Long, savoury and very satisfying and once again intensely mouth-watering. Bring on the almonds! L&S (Jun 2018)

This is rich, concentrated and powerful with very intense, salty, tangy, bready aromas and a zippy, detailed palate with a vivid salty quality. There’s a lovely weight in the mouth with lots of rich, spicy flavours, fine herbs and some notes of old casks. This is really compelling, in a bold, intense, rich style. This is the 2018 bottling of the Valdespino single vineyard Manzanilla Deliciosa En Rama. It’s from six casks of the Manzanilla Deliciosa Solera, which comes from the Pago de Miraflores vineyard in Sanlucar de Barrameda, and it is bottled ‘en rama’ straight from the cask. Unusually for a sherry producer, Valdespino own 750 hectares of their own vineyards, and are one of the few to make single-vineyard sherries. This Manzanilla Deliciosa Solera is found in 16th Century Bodega Misericordia in the Barrio Alto of Sanlucar de Barrameda. Rating: 93 Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com (Jun 2018)

Valdespino

Bodega Valdespino is one of the oldest bodegas in Jérez, originating in 1264, when King Alfonso X gave Don Alfonso Valdespino the gift of land in the City of Jérez. He was one of 24 Christian knights who fought to regain the City of Jérez from the Moors. The company of today was formed in 1875, but commercial activities are thought to date as far back as 1430. In 1999, Valdespino was bought by Grupo Estévez who were able to fund and maintain the traditional methods for which Valdespino is famous. Valdespino Sherries remain among the very best quality available, and Inocente is still the best Fino in the market, as well as being the only Sherry to be produced from the grapes of a single vineyard. Subtle changes to some of the other wines appear to have been for the best. Tío Diego Amontillado is now a little softer in style making it even more appealing and Don Gonzalo has been re-released in the VS range of older Solera wines.
