GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2018 1er Cru Fonteny Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

This vineyard is close to Ruchottes. Very well placed. After tasting Petite Chapelle, this feels broader and easier - more mild-mannered. Deep red, plummy fruit - whiffs of cherry and some cherry skin peps. But the mineral grip and drive builds. Fine tannins grow. This has a cool feel and an edge then the power builds. Quite a potent beast really - but so measured. Gently imposing. Clever stuff. L&S (Nov 2019)

Pure, airy and fresh if decidedly restrained aromas grudgingly reveal their notes of violet, pomegranate, black raspberry and whiffs of spice and earth. The firm, intense and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing, even seductive, mid-palate that contrasts with the muscular, stony and superbly long finish. This is a stunning example of the vineyard and well worth checking out. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

One of the highlights of the range this year is the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny, a deep and complex wine that reveals appealing aromas of cassis, black truffles, wild berries, licorice and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, succulent and enveloping, with a fleshy core of lively, vibrant but concentrated fruit that's framed by powdery tannins. This is an especially dynamic Fonteny that really stands out in 2018. It was vinified with 60% whole cluster and matured in 50% new oak. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Fonteny 1er Cru was showing just a little reduction on the nose, but there is plenty of vibrant red fruit underneath that should spring forth once in bottle. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very fine acidity and quite a structured, dense finish that has a saline touch. Great potential here. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
