LE MONTRACHET

2018 Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru Joseph Drouhin

EN PRIMEUR

From the Marquis de Laguiche's two hectare holding which is a quarter of the whole eight hectare appellation. A fresh geen-gold. Immediate harmonious ripeness on nose. Sleek and supple start with total freshness - but the richness is there: huge power and elegance - penetrating, with remarkable intensity and length. So open and smiling, yet this is very grand too. Drinking range: 2026 - L&S (Nov 2019)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru has a lime-driven bouquet, touches of orange pith, not much in the way of mineralité, though it does develop an intriguing liquorice scent with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a smooth, honeyed entry, white chocolate infused citrus fruit. Vanillary at the moment with a seductive finish. Delicious...but where will it go? Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. Drinking range: 2026 - 2052 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2022)

What a glorious white with such length, complexity and character that changes all the time. Dried-apple, cream, pineapple and honey notes, as well as light tropical fruit and honeysuckle. It’s full-bodied and very tight and compact. The finish goes on for minutes with honey, flint, cream and apples. A dream. Of course, you are supposed to age this, but it’s so beautiful now. Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2020)

An overtly spicy nose possesses really lovely layering with its combination of white peach, lemon rind, jasmine tea, soft oak and pretty floral nuances. Once again there is a strikingly sophisticated texture to the dense and sleekly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while buffering the firm acid spine shaping the hugely long finale. As is often the case with the Drouhin Montrachet, this is a big but very classy wine that marries power with refinement. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2020)

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the two-hectares on the Puligny side, comprising five parcels vinified separately (although I tasted the final blend). It has a very pure bouquet and, especially for Drouhin, an intense bouquet of lanolin, walnut and pressed flower aromas that if anything becomes even more powerful with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with superb balance, almost symmetrical, and just the right amount of salinity. This is a vibrant, precise Montrachet with touches of sea salt and ginger toward the very persistent finish, which fans out with brio. Deeply impressive. Drinking range: 2024 - 2055 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

The 2ha here are the largest in the grand cru and have been put to good use by Veronique Drouhin and her team. Wonderful citrus and stone fruit aromas, kitchen spices and patisserie, very fine 30% new wood and remarkable palate length. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 97 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Dec 2019)

Smells intense, rich and somehow regal. Super-ripe fruit – volume and richness in the mouth. Deep, long and generous. A big, full-bodied and intense wine but with the spiced freshness to balance. Lots of spice. Terrific wine in a big, rich style. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 18 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2019)

Despite the size of their vineyard holding, not all Drouhin's wines come from their own domaine, but most of the other wines do come from long-term contracts, such as exists with the Marquis de Laguiche wines. In all but name these wines are 'Domaine' wines, and the vineyards are cared for and the wines vinified with exactly the same care.
