Noticeably rich and sweetly scented, the 2018 Bianco Peloro, a blend of 65% Grillo and 35% Carricante, opens up to offer notes of melon and mango, almond paste and hints of vanilla custard. It’s silky and pliant, with waves of ripe orchard fruits complemented by sweet spices and hints of hazelnut. For all of its richness, the Peloro still comes across as nicely balanced and fresh, as it concludes with hints of raw honey and salted toffee. The 2018 Peloro Bianco is a blend of Grillo and Caricante (this estate spells the grape with one "r") with linear and sharp edges. The Grillo grapes add snappy freshness and linearity, while the Caricante is more neutral and more impactful in terms of mouthfeel. This is a fresh and zesty wine to pair with fried avocado or that fatty tuna belly sushi roll, otoro. No oak was used. Some 10,000 bottles were made. Le Casematte
There can't be too many wine estates named after WWII gun emplacements, but the three concrete casemattes among the vines designed to protect the Strait of Messina have indeed inspired the name of Le Casematte - "a place where grapevines have supplanted death" they say on their web-site, probably quite profound. Le Casematte was founded in 2008 by former footballer Andrea Barzagli and accountant Gianfranco Sabbatino. The vines are in the north of Sicily, with vineyards rising to 500m above sea-level, and northerly exposures helping to mitigate the southern sun-shine. They are committed to organic farming.
