RASTEAU

2018 Les Coteaux Domaine des Escaravailles

Grapes Grenache, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Rasteau
ABV 15%

The most immediate of the reds from Escaravailles, beautifully upholstered with plush plum, blackberry and ripe damson fruit. In the mouth the wines is so shapely, gorgeous concentration of woodland fruits, herbs, ground pepper, definitely rich but balanced and lithe and long. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026 L&S (Mar 2021)

Jancis Robinson's Favourite Reds 2021
This sweet, accessible blend of Grenache with 20 per cent Syrah from a southern Rhône hillside is not for those seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, but it carries its 15 per cent surprisingly well.
Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2021)

Transparent garnet. Very sweet, well-resolved palate entry. Seems to holds its alcohol very well on the palate but I can feel my metabolism already responding to the potency. Gentle with very light tannins left. Very approachable and charming! Drinking range: 2020 - 2021 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2021)

Grape varieties: 80% Grenache noir and 20% Syrah.

Terroir: Municipality of RASTEAU, the vines are located at an altitude of 250 m. Sloping terroir with stony and very steep clay-limestone soils.

Viticulture: The soil is worked in its entirety with respect for the environment and the plant. Vinification: Manual harvest. Destemming and crushing. Fermentation from 28 to 35 days. Winemaker's notes (Mar 2021)

Domaine des Escaravailles

Domaines des Escaravailles was established in 1953 by Jean-Louis Ferran and his two sons, Daniel and Jean-Pierre, in the village of Rasteau.

Today it is run by the third generation of the family, Gilles, the son of Daniel. With vineyards on not only the clay, limestone hillsides of Rasteau, but also in Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and St Roman de Malegarde. The estate is run organically and everything is done by hand with the wines made in the cellars in the heart of the property in Rasteau.

The estate takes it's name from the Occitan word for the Scarab Beetle, which you will also find adorning the labels of the wines.
