RUSTENBERG
2018 John X Merriman
Grapes | Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc |
Colour | Red |
Origin | South Africa, Stellenbosch |
ABV | 14.5% |
Delicious and sophisticated echos of Bordeaux jump out of the glass. Great spice and plummy fruit work so well together - some richness - but never sweet - never overbearing,. This is a delicious 'Old School - New World' option. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. This wine is named in honour of a former owner of Rustenberg, John Xavier Merriman, who bought the farm in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phylloxera crisis. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida’s Valley, the area close to the town of Stellenbosch in which Rustenberg is situated. The John X Merriman is a powerful wine that rewards aging. In its youth the wine is worth decanting and expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits complemented with cigar tobacco and sour cherry notes. As the wine ages and its fine grained tannins soften a softer more savoury palate develops revealing wonderful drinkability and tertiary complexity.Winemaker's notes (Jul 2020)
Rustenberg
Vineyards producing the grapes for Rustenberg's wines climb the rich red slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg. The style of wine determines the vineyard to be used: Rustenberg has a history of success with reds.
The viticulturist, Nico Walters, and his dedicated team have been working hard to rejuvenate their vineyards by planting virus-free vines imported from France. A small-scale nursery has been started for propagation, providing available rootstock for upgrading, replanting and experimentation. Controlled irrigation is used when necessary to alleviate stressed vines and maximise the quality of the grapes. All grapes are hand-harvested in the early mornings and all vineyard blocks vinified separately, then blended for added complexity.
