Following on from the beautiful 2015 vintage comes the 2018 Brut - one that Henry Warde describes as a classic, easy vintage for them. Aged for 28 months of the lees, this is a wonderfully pleasing yet complex wine from the guys at Squerryes. The star of the show here is really the Pinot Meunier, making up 31% of the blend, bringing a lovely approachability - fresh, floral and harmonious. An absolute belter of a summer sparkler. Started with the 'Beast from the East' leading to very late bud burst and real concern about whether we would have enough ripening time in our high altitude vineyard. Then the year became the viticulturist’s dream with lovely June and July sunshine, just the right amount of rain and beautiful ripe fruit with good berry weights and yields, harvesting earlier than previous years in early October.

GRAPE VARIETY 36% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 31% Pinot Meunier DOSAGE 5g/l LEES AGEING 30 months DISGORGED October 2021 Attributes MALOLACTIC 100% PROCESSING Whole bunch pressed and naturally settled for 24-36 hours FERMENTATION First in stainless steel tanks, second in bottle with champagne yeast

TASTING NOTE The latest release from the Squerryes stable is the 2018 vintage Brut, which has the hallmark clean bruised apple nose with notes of brioche and pastries. The palate is full and rounded with soft ripe orchard fruits, great concentration and beautiful balance. Classic Squerryes freshness and elegance with underlying richness from an exceptionally warm vintage.

Winemaker's notes (Jul 2022)

Squerryes

‘Licet Esse Beatis’: it is permitted to be joyful. This motto, that adorns the doorway to the Squerryes Estate, could not be more fitting of the wines.

From this corner of the North Downs, often overlooked in winemaking with the more famous South Downs stealing the limelight, the Warde family first noticed the potential in the estate and planted vines here in 2006. A geological survey had confirmed that the chalk escarpment had qualities similar to the esteemed 'Côte des Blancs' region of Champagne.

The only use their own grapes, and the base wines that are blended into the cuvée are aged for the lees for extended periods, creating incredible complexity in the wines.

The wines are extremely smart and beautifully complex, offering masses of autolytic layering with a gorgeous line of fresh acidity.
