CHAPELLE CHAMBERTIN

2019 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

As always the Chapelle Chambertin, tasted after the Charmes, has a darker fruit, a much firmer and more muscled frame, taut and tannic and driven. Tannins that are dense with dusty purple-dark fruit, and powerful stuff, intense and long. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045L&S (Oct 2020)

(from Chapelle proper). Like several wines in the range, there is a touch of herbal tea to the abundantly spiced nose of various dark berries where floral and spicy top notes appear. Once again there is excellent volume and punch to the dense, sappy and delicious larger-scaled flavors that deliver very fine length on the seductively textured and sneaky long finish. This is also quite good and a wine that should amply reward 12 to 15 years of cellar time but could also be approached after 7 to 8 years. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is more expressive, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, orange rind, potpourri and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with its elegantly chalky structuring tannins largely concealed in an enveloping core of fruit, it's long and perfumed. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Rich deep purple, with a slightly meaty tone to the nose at first. Luxury purple style fruit, a density, a weight and still a freshness behind. Very interesting classy fruit, good density, persistent, not too shallow, certainly ripe dark raspberry fruit. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 93-97 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

Pierre Damoy has sold this fruit to him since 2003: 45- and 88-year-old vines. Cask sample. Savoury and lively with great appeal and silky texture and a little punch on the end. Lovely wine! Drinking range: 2027 - 2047 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has an attractive nose with blackberry, hints of melted tar and crushed violet. Wonderful focus here, more than the Charmes-Chambertin at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, spicy and full of vim and vigour. There is a lot of coiled-up energy on the finish, the tension palpable long after the wine has departed. This oozes class. Drinking range: 2025 - 2048 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
