CHARMES CHAMBERTIN

2019 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

The highest part of Charmes, next to the Dugats and Rousseau. Surprises by having quite an authoritative nose, bold and defined. Touch on the mouth is pure Charmes, sleek and fresh and absolutely no edges. Great purity, it positively floats on the palate, with a mineral lift that surprises every year - mouth watering and linear, that purity continues long and long. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045L&S (Oct 2020)

Riper and juicier than I was expecting, but I suppose that Charmes often has a flattering side to it, this is a slightly fuller-framed wine than usual and this reflects the nature of the vintage. The nose and finish bookend a fabulously glossy palate and this is a marvellous and rather mellow wine in every respect. Rating: 19+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2021)

(from a 1.5 ha parcel in Charmes proper). Moderate reduction mostly overshadows the ripe and earthy dark berry fruit aromas. By contrast there is very good freshness, outstanding intensity and concentration to the big-bodied, powerful and serious flavors that deliver superb length on the emphatically structured finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This promising and built-to-age effort is a big but still relatively refined wine that is less youthfully austere than normal. Drinking range: 2034 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

Another rather backward cuvée during my visit was the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, elegantly muscular wine evocative of cherries, wild berries and potpourri. As with the Griotte, I'm hesitant to even offer a score, and look forward to revisiting the wine in bottle. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Vibrant rich purple, a bouncing blockbuster Charmes, though the nose is a little bit reduced. There is a slight coconut effect here from the oak but it works rather well alongside the exuberant sweet strawberry notes. Super-succulent finish, class and elegance as well as the sumptuous side. Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars Rating: 94-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

55-year-old vines just opposite Le Chambertin. Cask sample. This would wake anyone up! Quite a bit of sucrosité but sufficient acidity even if the tannins are almost hidden. So juicy and fun – not a long-faced serious wine … Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2020)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which comes from Perrot-Minot’s own vineyard, is a bit sullen on the nose compared to the Griottes. It never quite obtains the same amplitude, feels a little timid, a Charmes that doesn’t charm at the moment probably due to a bit of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple, rounded tannins. The concentration is loaded on the back end of this Charmes though I feel that the Griottes has more delineation and nerve. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
