Made without added sulphur, Cahors Extra Libre became possible only after years of preparation in the vineyards. Black in colour. Wild berries, spices and a hint of violets - despite the dark expression it is lifted and bright, finishing on cedary notes - very much Cahors in profile. L&S (Sep 2020)

Dark purplish crimson. Heady bramble fruit on the nose. Quite luscious with a spearmint top note – much softer than many traditional Cahors. It's not at all like any Argentine Malbec either. Chateau du Cèdre, widely regarded as one of Cahors' leading estate, is the domaine of brothers Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. Pascal, a mathematician at heart who came to winemaking later in life, is the driving force here. Although the son of a winemaker - his father founded the domaine in 1956 - he took little interest in the daily running of the vineyards and making wines until his experiences in Burgundy, making wines with Jean-Marie Guffens, swayed his opinion.
Everyone's favourite grape variety, these days, seems to be Malbec. It's easy to see why, especially as the Argentinians have crafted a bright bold and flavoursome style out of the grape variety that Bordeaux forgot. In this case you will find a quartet of very typical Mendoza Malbecs, including one from master wine maker Nicolas Catena with his slightly more subtle take on pure Malbec. And whilst Bordeaux may have (mostly) cast off Malbec, it still hangs on in the Cahors region of South West France from where we have included a brace of fine examples.
