Pretty nose. You want to dive into the lovely red fruit. Some good detailed layers of pretty fruit, a fragrant lift of good red berries and flowers too - but there is a smooth feel. A very silky sexy flow. Nice weight - good aromatics and balancing creamy tannins. Very attractive Margaux - delicate for the vintage but well judged. 54% Cabernet, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc & 6% Petit Verdot (from their sandy soils) which adds much of the detail and definition. A fantastic du Tertre with blackberries and blueberries. Very pure fruit character in general. Stone and tea undertones. It’s full-bodied with a tight, focused tannin backbone. Excellent structure. The Grand Vin 2019 Château Du Tertre checks in as 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. This beautiful Margaux offers awesome notes of black raspberries, crushed flowers, sandalwood, spice, and a touch of bouquet garni. With medium to full-bodied richness, polished tannins, and a great finish, it's certainly the finest wine I've tasted from this domaine. It's going to evolve nicely over the coming two decades. The 2019 Château du Tertre has a light blackberry, gravelly nose that needs a little more oomph. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a bit soft and smudged, an easygoing and early-drinking Margaux that should give a decade of drinking pleasure (as long as you can abide it being a bit rough around the edges). This vindicates my previous criticisms of this Margaux, though better times lie ahead. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Château du Tertre
Margaux Cinquième cru 1855
Château du Tertre is an estate whose star has risen quite considerably in recent years and offers a good bet to those seeking a decent Margaux without breaking the bank.
Château du Tertre lies just north of the village of Arsac in the south-east corner of the Margaux commune. The name refers to the hillock on which the vineyards stand and unusually for the Haut-Médoc the vineyards are in a single block around the château. Du Tertre has a long history dating back at least to the 12th Century when it was owned by the Seigneurie d'Arsac, and featured for a while in the extensive holdings of the Ségur family. A Ségur connection of a sort was re-established in 1961 when Philippe Gasqueton, who already owned Calon-Ségur in Saint Estèphe, bought the run-down du Tertre and set about restoring the château and vineyards. After his death in 1995, du Tertre was sold to Eric and Louise Albada Jelgersma who own the neighbouring Château Giscours.
The 50ha of vines are planted to 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine spends 18 months in wood, of which 50% is new.
