CHÂTEAU GLORIA

2019 Cru Bourgeois Saint Julien

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification Cru Bourgeois
ABV 13.5%

Delicious. Rich and poised. Attractive, succulent and well spiced nose - leads to a really well shaped, concentrated mouthful. Rich and broad, loaded with ripe blackberries and firm plum flesh - but with a line of brightness. This has energy and a slight eucalyptus bounce that with the spice makes the plush fruit so moreish. Gloria lovers will not be disappointed with this very good effort. One for every cellar! 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Melot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot & just 45% New Oak. L&S (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Gloria has a compelling nose: black fruit, crushed rocks, tobacco and very subtle marine scents that are all beautifully combined. Perhaps the most precise and delineated nose among an impressive array of Saint-Julien's this year. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively opening. A touch of soy infuses the black fruit; fine-boned with wonderful sapidity on the finish. Extraordinary length. Serious. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2027 - 2060 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

So good, this is a vibrant mix of young and exuberant, luxurious, seriously creamy in texture, crushed stone, baked earth, smoked caramel, damson, sweet blackberry and damson fruits. This is pure pleasure, hard to resist. 45% new oak, 40hl/ha yield, harvest September 23 to October 4. Remi di Constanzo technical director. Drinking range: 2029 - 2046 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2023)

The 2019 Gloria is a powerful, brooding Saint-Julien. Sweet red cherry, iron, dried flowers, menthol, herbs and cedar lend quite a bit of character. In 2019, Gloria is defined by its intensely feral personality and tannins. Perhaps time will help. Today, Gloria does not appear to be quite the charmer that it can be. Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Château Gloria

Château Gloria is an unclassified St-Julien property that produces clarets that equal in quality those from the more prestigious classed growths. Henri Martin, a cooper by upbringing, took over the property in 1942 and began purchasing plots of vineyards from classed growth properties such as Gruaud-Larose, Talbot, Lagrange and Léoville-Barton. By the mid 1960s he had 50 hectares spread across the appellation. In 1982 he purchased Château St-Pierre and thus realised his lifetime ambition of owning a Grand Cru Classé property. Henri Martin died in 1991 and Gloria is now run by his son-in-law Jean-Louis Triaud. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is aged in a combination of large oak foudres and small oak barrels (50% new). Gloria produces a wine that is typically deep in colour and rich, cassis-laden and cedary on the palate. It normally needs 7-10 years of bottle age to show at its best.
