The 2019 La Garde comes across rather oaky on the nose, occluding the terroir expression and freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine grip, just a little chewy and forced towards the finish. Doesn't need to try this hard. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 La Garde is a bold, punchy wine. Wild red cherry, game, licorice, tobacco, incense and gravel give the 2019 its distinctive flavor profile. This tasty red Graves will drink beautifully at the dinner table. It certainly has a ton to offer. Drinking range: 2024 - 2039 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 La Garde offers attractive red currant, wild strawberry, gravel and cedar scents on the intense nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and quite sturdy for this cru, displaying fine depth and impressive backbone on the finish. Very promising. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Château La Garde

Château La Garde is a medium-sized property with 47 hectares of vineyards in Pessac-Léognan, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc. The Cabernet-dominated red wines are soft, well structured and packed with smooth, ripe fruit which makes them very attractive young, though they also possess good medium-term cellaring potential. Bought by the dynamic Bordeaux merchant Dourthe in the 1980s, this gem of an estate displays the true Graves minerality underneath an exuberant cassis-and-plums aroma. After huge initial investment in the vineyard and cellar immense care is now lavished upon the wine itself, and any re-assessment of the Pessac-Léognan classification would surely see this wine elevated to Cru Classé status
