CHÂTEAU MEYNEY

2019 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur
ABV 13%

The 2019 Meyney has a divine bouquet, so pure and winsome with floral red berry scents, beautifully integrated new oak and superb precision. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy to the point where you can almost overlook the backbone of this Saint-Estèphe. It could have been blowsy, yet it retains superb balance and feels luxuriant and long on the finish. This is a stellar showing easily eclipsing its performances either in barrel or just after bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2026 - 2055 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 Meyney is a deep, powerful wine. It shows all the richness and intensity that are such signatures, but with that added kick of vibrancy that has become the norm in recent years. Tobacco, cedar, wild flowers, mint and incense add layers of nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. The 2019 is beautifully done. Drinking range: 2025 - 2039 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Meyney has a well-defined, fragrant, floral bouquet of ample red currant and cranberry fruit, touches of pencil shaving and smoke emerging with aeration, followed later by the tertiary aspect that one associates with the appellation. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, black pepper and graphite, tightening toward the finish but still showing fine length. This is a very fine Meyney that may warrant a higher score down the line. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

A solid, slightly burly version, featuring streaks of tar and bay leaf mixed with dark plum and black currant preserve flavors. The finish is underscored by a warm paving stone note, which adds cut, drive and a hint of old school. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2036. —J.M. Rating: 93 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Jan 2022)

Château Meyney

Chateau Meyney in St. Estephe has a long history starting in the 1662, when it is mentioned in records as a convent, making it one of the oldest estates in the Médoc. It occupies a gravelly bank facing the Gironde and is a neighbour of Montrose.

The 51 hectare vineyard with vines averaging between 35 and 40 years old is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. The gravel based terroir has a large streak of blue clay close to three metres thick.

In 2004, Meyney was bought by CA Grands Châteaux, also owners of Château de Rayne Vigneau and Château Grand-Puy Ducasse. They have employed Hubert de Boüard as consulting oenologist.
