CHÂTEAU PIBRAN

2019 Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification Cru Bourgeois

This is smart. More grip and guts than expected from the inviting nose. Nicely structured and a pleasing freshness too. This gives a good frame for the softly ripe fruit. Some notes of date some blackcurrant. You can sense the summer heat, just. Well spiced again - a waft of clove, some lifted aromatics of purple cough sweets the hard gummy lozenges. Very attractive and good energy, but still some edge here. 47% Cabernet Sauvignon & 53% Merlot. L&S (Jun 2020)

Aromas of black cherries, blackberries, cloves, black tea, wet earth and graphite. Medium-to full-bodied with firm, smooth tannins. Nicely balanced, with a compact core of dark fruit. Drinking range: 2025 - Rating: 91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Pibran is a blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 53% Merlot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 50% new, for 18 months. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with vivacious scents of crushed red and black currants, warm plums and boysenberries with touches of wild thyme, cracked black pepper and moss-covered tree bark. Medium-bodied, the palate is packed with juicy red and black fruits, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and loads of freshness, finishing on a minerally note. Rating: 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Pibran is aged in 50% new oak and the rest one-year old oak for an intended 18 months. There is a lot of rondeur on the nose, plump and generous with black plum, smoke and tobacco aromas. The palate is assertive and punchy on opening, grippy tannins for Pibran with strong graphite notes permeating that black fruit on the finish. Usually one of the more approachable Pauillac crus, I would afford this 4-5 years in bottle. Old school in the positive sense of the expression. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

Château Pibran

Château Pibran, now under the guidance Christian Seely and the AXA-Millesimes team, produces with good complexity, weight and concentration. Its 9.5 hectares of vineyards stretch across a well-drained gravel bank and border those of Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wines are vinified at Pichon-Baron. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine is matured for 12-15 months in barriques (50% new). Pibran is classified as a cru bourgeois but is now producing wines the equal of many of its more highly classified neighbours.
