CLOS DU CLOCHER

2019 Pomerol

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 13.5%

The 2019 Clos du Clocher presents a nose of beautifully defined black cherry and boysenberry fruit, truffle and hints of cedar, all very focused and full of vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. Some oak has yet to be subsumed on the entry, but there is great structure here, leading to a complex, tensile finish. This is an outstanding Pomerol. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Less exuberant than 2018, this has a touch of smoky reduction at first, and shows great structure and concentration. Plump cassis and blueberry fruits, grilled black pepper spice, anise, fennel and a touch of oyster shell through the palate. Mint leaf freshness on the finish, and an uncurling of peony flowers. Harvest 20 September to October 5, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in 60% new oak (brought down from 70% in 2018), 40% one year old (with a small trial of a glass wine globe). Bottled in May 2021. Drinking range: 2026 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

The 2019 Clos du Clocher has a very seductive bouquet with layers of dark cherry, wild strawberry, soy and truffle scents. Later a touch of vanilla emanates from the oak, perfectly in sync with the fruit. The palate is very well balanced and super-smooth, fine acidity and a graceful, yet quite intense finish that leaves a residue of spice on the aftertaste. Very persistent. Outstanding. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Clos du Clocher is a wonderfully complete and expressive wine. Lifted aromatics lead into a core of inky dark fruit, with beams of tannin that give the wine shape as well as energy. There is a sense of vibrancy to the 2019 that I find very appealing. Hints of lavender, sage, mint and licorice add pretty top notes to round things out. This is such a pretty wine. Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

Clos du Clocher

A property in three plots on the plateau of Pomerol, about 4.6 hectares, a mixture of clay, gravel and sandy soils, planted with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in about 60% new wood and production is around 2000 cases per annum. A new chai was created in 2010, and quality has leapt forward here.
