CORTON

2019 Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Rather a good open nose compared with its Nuits Grands Cru stablemates. Firm and classical, rich and dense - again it is all here - a rich succulence to the finish, and very long.L&S (Nov 2020)

This is plump and juicy, featuring black cherry, plum, tomato leaf and sweet spice flavors. There are firm tannins underneath and this is long, with echoes oak spice in the aftertaste. Be patient. Best from 2025 through 2045. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 95 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2022)

A truly amazing Corton, thanks to the laser beam of sour-cherry aroma that shoots right through this sleek and vibrant wine. Great concentration, but remains light on its feet. The mineral finish extends and extends as you struggle to take it all in. Still very young with enormous aging potential. Drink or hold. Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2021)

Here too there is a mentholated top note to the much earthier aromas of poached plum, underbrush, red currant and touches of the sauvage. There is excellent verve to the equally broad-shouldered and muscular flavors that possess outstanding complexity on the tannic, serious and beautifully long finish that is a bit less austere than it usually is at this early juncture. This beautifully well-made effort will also require extended bottle age to reveal its full potential, but it should very much be worth the wait. Drinking range: 2039 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley opens in the glass with notes of cassis, wild berries, warm spices, orange rind, rose petals, espresso roast and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's vibrant and lively, marrying notable concentration with fine-boned structure. Long and mineral, it's more ethereal than its rich, muscular 2018 counterpart. Rating: 93 - 95+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Very dense red purple, lively though, and holds up after the sensuality of Clos de Bèze. Stricter. Darker fruit, very good structure here, fills out the palate, dark raspberry, with slightly more severe tannins. Very good fruit acid balance. This works very well, and has a distinguished future. Lightly saline to finish. Tasted: November 2020 ***** Rating: 93 - 96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru comes from the 2.77-hectare monopole. This was actually quite closed on the nose compared with Faiveley’s Gevrey Grand Crus, coming across earthy and rather sullen at first, and opening with earthy/woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and harmonious on the entry. The fine, lightly spiced finish reveals clove and touches of graphite. Nice persistence here. This holds a lot of promise. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
