CRIOTS BÂTARD MONTRACHET

2019 Haute Densité Grand Cru Domaine Hubert Lamy

EN PRIMEUR

There is a single 228-liter barrel (dating back to the 2015 vintage) of Lamy's extraordinary 2019 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru Haut Densité. Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, orange oil, white flowers, smoke, beeswax, nutmeg and fresh bread, it's full-bodied, layered and unctuously concentrated, with incisive acids, muscular structuring extract and a long, tangy finish. This is a remarkable wine in the making. Rating: 97-99 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, of which there is just one used barrel, has a strict bouquet with apple blossom, granite and light fumé aromas. Wonderful precision as you often find in Lamy's jewels. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, very precise and mineral-driven. It seems to unfold wonderfully and feels persistent and sapid on the finish. It will not be easy to find, but it will be worth the hunt. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

1 x 228 barrel from 2013, as for the Puligny. Pale lemon and lime. Very little bouquet, but we are now tasting in freezing conditions. Starts to emerge and it is really fine boned, not massive Montrachet. Brilliantly balanced stylish and fine, with volume, but absolutely without heat. Gorgeous, with a really long finish in a fine pure white style. Tasted: October 2020 ***** Rating: 95-98 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2020)

Olivier Lamy has built on the solid foundations his father Hubert prepared with twenty years and more of work in the vineyards. Today the Domaine has 18.5 hectares of vines - 80% are Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. The vines are in several appellations - Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, as well as the excellent Bourgogne Blanc. The reputation of the domaine is now made, but the Saint Aubins, both red and white, remain some of the bargains of Côte d'Or, and challenge the supposed superiority of the grander village names on a regular basis, both in terms of young and mature wines.

Olivier's wine-making style and preference is to emphasise the fresh and the mineral side of his wines, and there is very little new wood in this cellar, with many wines with no new wood at all, and that is with the wines in 600 litre demi-muids rather that the classic Burgundy (225 litre) fût. Certainly Oliver's whites do have an arrow-like purity and intensity, and seem to age completely straight and true.

The reds are worth more than a casual mention too. Olivier has been getting some consultation help from Sylvain Pataille, and the wines have energy and bounce along with the supple tannins and ripeness.
