HAUT BAILLY II

2019 Pessac-Léognan Château Haut Bailly

EN PRIMEUR

Formerly known as "La Parde de Haut-Bailly," this second wine from Haut-Bailly is very attractive in 2019. Very silky and polished but with good bite in the middle. Nice floral notes, some fresh damp tobacco aromatics too. Good feel, silky and indulgent somehow, with flow and nicely exotic Persian spices that add charm to the back end. (60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon) L&S (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is much more elegant and nuanced than it was from barrel, always a great thing to see. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright red berry, spice, tobacco, cedar and mint in this gracious, mid-weight second wine from the estate. The 2019 will surely improve in bottle, but it is pretty enticing today. Drinking range: 2024 - 2039 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II, the second wine of Haut-Bailly, has accentuated the sous-bois elements on the nose since bottling, now feeling quintessentially Pessac-Léognan and quite marine-influenced in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh, still a little piquant on the finish but with more precision than I recall. This is very impressive. Excellent. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Sculpted, balanced and easy to love savoury plum and grilled blackberry fruit flavours. This moves carefully through the palate, gently delineated, with delicate tannins, smoked caramel and gunsmoke on the finish. Showing more complexity than it did En Primeur, just as you would hope with a 2nd wine but is not always the case in 2019. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is a very serious second wine. Big, potent tannis give the 2019 much of its somber, brooding personality. Black cherry, graphite, licorice, cloves and new leather infuse the 2019 with tremendous complexity. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2019 for at least a few years. If this tasting is any indication, it is a real powerhouse with quite a bit of cellaring potential. Rating: 92-94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

Composed of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot, the 2019 Haut-Bailly II was harvested from the 23rd of September to the 10th of October. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the nose is already wonderfully forward and harmonious, featuring bright black cherries, blackberry preserves and wild blueberries scents plus suggestions of lavender, tilled soil and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid foundation of chewy tannins and oodles of freshness backing up the muscular, mouth-coating black and blue fruits, finishing fruity. Rating: 88-90 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Jun 2020)

Ripe and pure on the nose. Dark-fruit notes, the cassis more obvious as it opens. Medium bodied with a touch of sweetness on attack then crunchy fruit on the mid palate. Slight savoury edge then minerally and dry on the finish, the Graves imprint present. Drinking range: 2025 - 2034 Rating: 16.5 James Lawther MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2020)

The 2019 Haut-Bailly II, formerly La Parde de Haut-Bailly, was picked from 23 September to 10 October. This bursts from the glass with crushed strawberry, dark cherries, vanilla and light sous-bois aromas - utterly charming. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiseled tannins, a keen line of acidity, precise and vibrant with just a touch of piquancy on the finish. This is an absolutely delightful second label that comes highly recommended. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2020)

Chewy depth to the tannins, buoyed up by juice rippling through the red berry fruits. Gourmet and silky, a creamy texture through the mid palate with hints of subtle caramel and baked earth. Excellent. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (May 2020)

The now very reliable Pessac-Léognan estate of Haut Bailly was revived after its purchase by Belgian Daniel Sanders. He'd married into the Bordeaux wine trade in 1919, and formed a determination to buy Haut Bailly after tasting their awesome 1945. There was much work to do upon buying the estate, some of the vines were still ungrafted for instance, and the renovation was still not complete by the time Daniel's son took over in 1979. Véronique Sanders represents the latest generation to run the estate, albeit under the benign ownership of American Robert Wilmers who bought Haut Bailly in 1998 bringing more much needed investment, the fruits of which can be seen in the high quality of today's wines. The vineyards are planted to a fairly typical "Left Bank" mix of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc.

Ordering

Prices are all in bond by the case size stated.

Pre-Orders are a firm commitment to buy wines on release, as long as the release price is within the upper and lower price bands set by you on the pre-order form. Pre-orders will be fulfilled subject to availability but providing this firm commitment to buy effectively gives you priority and is a good idea for the most desirable wines.

Wines listed on the website can be ordered in the usual way via the website wishlist order form. You can also send orders directly to our private client team via email. Please note that, for the most sought-after wines, priority will be given to those who ordered the same wines last year and to those that have pre-ordered.

Confirmation

All orders will be confirmed by email and are binding unless written cancellation is received within seven days of email confirmation. Pre-orders are not binding if the release price is above your upper price band.

Invoices are all raised at the in bond price (excluding any duty and VAT) which will become payable at the prevailing rates when the wines arrive in the UK, should you wish to take duty paid delivery.

Payment is required on sight of invoice, by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We regret we cannot accept credit cards for en primeur orders. We reserve the right to apply a dunning charge of 2% per month on invoices unpaid after 30 days.

  • Shipment to our bond (at LCB Creek Road) and insurance are included in the in bond price.
  • Delivery is free to Lea and Sandeman / Elephant storage accounts, both duty paid and in bond.
  • Other deliveries (In Bond and Duty Paid) are also free subject to a minimum order from the offer of £500. Orders below this total will be charged an administration and handling fee of £16.50+ VAT when invoices are issued. We will group deliveries and this is a charge for your entire purchases, not a per-case charge.
  • Delivery of 2023 Bordeaux bought en primeur is expected during 2026. Delivery dates may vary as wines are shipped from Bordeaux at different times.

Practical notes - how it works

We start a sale in each customer's name and add all their primeur orders to one sale which is invoiced at the end of the campaign (or when the customer wishes). Immediate payment of invoices is then required by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We and our customers find that having a single invoice for the vintage is the simpler option but please note that confirmed orders are still binding even if the final invoice has not yet been issued.

Please specify on your wishlist order form where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. If this is to a third-party bonded warehouse, please specify the relevant account details. If the wines are required duty-paid we will issue a second invoice for duty and VAT at the prevailing rate when the wines are available for delivery.

Half-bottles, Magnums and larger bottles.

One of the additional advantages of buying en primeur is being able to order the wine in the format you want. While most of our listings are for 75cl bottles, we can source wines in any format that is offered by the Château. Please note that format requests cannot be changed once wines have been invoiced. Additional charges for special formats do apply and are as follows:-

  • +£18.00 per case of 12 half-bottles
  • +£30.00 per case of 24 half-bottles
  • +£7.50 per case of 3 Magnums (2 bottles equivalent, 1.5 litres each)
  • +£11.00 per case of 6 Magnums
  • +£45.00 per individually boxed Double Magnum (4 bottles equivalent, 3 litres)
  • +£60.00 per individually boxed Imperial (8 bottles equivalent, 6 litres) for Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars and Melchiors please enquire for availability and price.
