LA CHENADE

2019 Lalande de Pomerol

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Lalande de Pomerol
ABV 14%

The 2019 La Chenade offers quite plump red fruit on the nose, a bit dusty and not as refined as its peers. Possibly some Brettanomyces at play. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannins, quite voluminous and outgoing in style, but doesn't quite deliver the complexity to back it up. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2019 La Chenade is a racy, voluptuous wine that will thrill readers who admire the late Denis Durantou's wines. Plush and succulent in the glass, with terrific presence, the 2019 exudes class from start to finish. Spice, cedar, leather and tobacco accents meld into a core of red-fleshed fruit. Persistent and vibrant from start to finish, La Chenade is a winner. Drinking range: 2024 - 2039 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

The 2019 La Chenade retains its exuberant nose of ripe black plum and kirsch scents, though on this showing, perhaps the Saintayme has a little more delineation now that both wines are in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied and shows more delineation and precision than the aromatics at the moment, offering dark berry fruit, white pepper and a touch of graphite, and turning quite spicy toward the finish. The nose does cohere in the glass, though, so afford this a year or two in bottle. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2022)

Grilled almond, sweet raspberry and red cherry fruit, fresh acidities, easy to love. Touch of gunsmoke reduction. Harvest September 18 to 26. 30% oak. Drinking range: 2023 - 2038 Rating: 92 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2022)

La Chenade

One of the brightest stars of Pomerol is undoubtedly Denis Durantou of the highly acclaimed Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Thankfully this glory is not enough for Denis and he also has a smaller estate in the less esteemed Lalande de Pomerol. Here Denis' skill and experience can produce magnificent wines that are a fraction of the price. The property is Château les Cruzelles, where he makes both Les Cruzelles but also La Chenade, another Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvée from the younger vines. He was even making this with Cruzelles’ grapes before he bought the estate in 2000. We champion this wine every year on primeur as it represents such consistently good value for money. Beautiful Bordeaux wine at an incredibly fair price - a rare gem.
