MEURSAULT

2019 1er Cru Perrières Domaine Henri Germain

EN PRIMEUR

Deep gold colour with green highlights. Outstanding richness. There's another level of depth and power, and despite being quite closed for now (like the Charmes it had not been racked) it has a level of richness, freshness and presence that you expect from a Grand Cru. 'Belle matière et fraîcheur', says Jean-François in his nicely understated way. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032L&S (Oct 2020)

From the sector known as Les Petites Perrières, next to Pierre Morey and Vincent Latour. Two new barrels in four. Perfect pale lemon colour and very classy nose, no excess heat here at all. Then comes a wave of intensity on the palate and now the sunshine on the grapes is more apparent, but as ever there is the requisite tension. A little bit of liquorice. Rating: ***** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Mar 2022)

(from a .12 ha parcel). Elegant, pure and airy aromas exhibit notes of cool green apple, mineral reduction, lemon-lime and a similar array of floral elements. The racy, intense and sleek middle weight flavors seem to be built on a base of minerality while the chiseled and cuts-like-a-knife finish goes on and on. This is very classy and a wine that should also amply repay extended bottle aging. Drinking range: 2031 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

There are two barrels of Germain's brilliant 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières, a wine that will be worth a special effort to seek out. Mingling hints of citrus zest and crisp orchard fruit with notions of white flowers, wet stones and fresh bread, it's medium to full-bodied, chiseled and searingly intense, with chalky structuring dry extract, tangy acids and a tensile, tightly wound profile. Rating: 95-97 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Jean-François Germain was joined in 2018 by his daughter Lucie - who is now helping to run this small (7ha) domaine.

The Chassagne vineyards came through his mother, a Pillot, and Jean-François is married to François Jobard's daughter, so they are quite intertwined with some of our other producers. The Poruzots comes from the rows next to Remi Jobard's. In terms of winemaking the Germains are always happy to let nature take its course, and in the vineyards they follow as natural a system of viticulture as possible (organic, not certified).

These are concentrated, tightly wound wines from one of Burgundy's coldest cellars. Alcoholic fermentations can take months and the malolactics are often late, so they have always gone for long élevage in old barrels, always for two winters, and the Premiers Crus usually for 22 months. Slow to develop, they show wonderful crystalline purity. New wood is used very sparingly, just to replace barrels sold when they get to ten years old.

For more details on the terms and fees associated with storage please go to our Storage Homepage or contact our primeurs team for more information.

While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.
