MEURSAULT

2019 Domaine Henri Germain

EN PRIMEUR

Almost a lighter nose than the Bourgogne, but although it is less expressive for now, it is full and pure on the palate, silky, richness developing but still linear. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028L&S (Oct 2020)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Made from seven plots all round the village, and bottled in early April. The nose here is a little flatter though suggests weight. Tight and quite powerful, noticeable creamier flesh, a little youthful bitterness, a level of weight above the Bourgogne and a little more persistence. Rating: **** Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Mar 2022)

(from 6 lieux-dits, including Vireuils, Peutes Vignes, Moulin à Judas, Clos du Cromin, Dressoles and Les Pellans). A very Meursault nose includes notes of grilled nuts, acacia blossom, citrus and various white orchard fruit scents. The racy, intense and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely texture while delivering excellent length on the balanced finale. Again, this is terrific for its level and will repay mid-term cellaring too. Drinking range: 2025 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

The 2019 Meursault Village is fragrant on the nose with enticing scents of lime, citrus peel, crushed pebbles and grapefruit. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, not terribly complex but it has bags of charm with hints of sour lemon, peach skin and pear towards the finish. It will be difficult to resist in its youth. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2021)

I love the gentle, balanced fruit here and completeness of this wine. Nothing is hurried nor too forced. Classic Germain. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Meursault Village offers up scents of beeswax, mandarin oil, white flowers, pear and fresh bread. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's incisive and tightly wound, with fine depth at the core and a long, chalky finish. As usual, it's derived from Vireuils, Les Pellans, Le Cromin and Au Moulin Judas. This is well worth seeking out. Rating: 90 - 92+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

Jean-François Germain was joined in 2018 by his daughter Lucie - who is now helping to run this small (7ha) domaine.

The Chassagne vineyards came through his mother, a Pillot, and Jean-François is married to François Jobard's daughter, so they are quite intertwined with some of our other producers. The Poruzots comes from the rows next to Remi Jobard's. In terms of winemaking the Germains are always happy to let nature take its course, and in the vineyards they follow as natural a system of viticulture as possible (organic, not certified).

These are concentrated, tightly wound wines from one of Burgundy's coldest cellars. Alcoholic fermentations can take months and the malolactics are often late, so they have always gone for long élevage in old barrels, always for two winters, and the Premiers Crus usually for 22 months. Slow to develop, they show wonderful crystalline purity. New wood is used very sparingly, just to replace barrels sold when they get to ten years old.
