PULIGNY MONTRACHET

2019 Tremblots Haute Densité Domaine Hubert Lamy

EN PRIMEUR

(from a vine density equivalent of 22,000 vines/ha). Elegant and very floral scented aromas include those of apple, pear and citrus confit. The round, concentrated and surprisingly powerful middle weight flavors possess a chalky texture on the clean and markedly dry finale that is not quite as complex. With that said, there is so much underlying material that it’s a good bet more complexity will develop with time in bottle. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2021)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots Haut Densité is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, citrus oil, white flowers and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, multidimensional and textural, it's searingly concentrated, with racy acids and huge levels of dry extract. Long and penetrating, it's being matured in a barrel that dates back to the 2013 vintage. Rating: 93-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Les Tremblots "Haut Densité", matured in an 8-year-old barrel, has a reticent nose at first that demands encouragement. Touches of liquorice and orange zest emerge with time. The very deep palate is well balanced with candied orange peel, mango and peach. Towards the finish it conveys the sensation akin to walking into a confectionary shop, with nectarine and praline. What a stunning Puligny this is going to become. Drinking range: 2023 - 2048 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2020)

Pale colour, very sensual nose, clearly a much greater density of broadly based white fruit, something suggestive of ripe Riesling, and more oak effect. There is of course a huge volume of fruit, but the oak shows even though it is old wood, indeed a barrel from the 2013 vintage. This may come together rather better later on. Tasted: October 2020 **** Rating: 91-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Oct 2020)

Olivier Lamy has built on the solid foundations his father Hubert prepared with twenty years and more of work in the vineyards. Today the Domaine has 18.5 hectares of vines - 80% are Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. The vines are in several appellations - Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, as well as the excellent Bourgogne Blanc. The reputation of the domaine is now made, but the Saint Aubins, both red and white, remain some of the bargains of Côte d'Or, and challenge the supposed superiority of the grander village names on a regular basis, both in terms of young and mature wines.

Olivier's wine-making style and preference is to emphasise the fresh and the mineral side of his wines, and there is very little new wood in this cellar, with many wines with no new wood at all, and that is with the wines in 600 litre demi-muids rather that the classic Burgundy (225 litre) fût. Certainly Oliver's whites do have an arrow-like purity and intensity, and seem to age completely straight and true.

The reds are worth more than a casual mention too. Olivier has been getting some consultation help from Sylvain Pataille, and the wines have energy and bounce along with the supple tannins and ripeness.
