CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

2020 Vieilles Vignes Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

EN PRIMEUR

Old vines in the Mal Carrées (planted 1954), Maladières and Les Gamaires a the bottom of the slope, and also Derrière le Four near the top, and les Fremières in the middle next to Beaux-Bruns. Deep and concentrated, an impression of softness and slickness, acidity surfacing on the finish bringing brightness and focus. For now it seems more clayey than the mineral Fouchères cuvée. Either way it does Chambolle very well, lush and floral, quite relaxed, feels like it might drink quite early. Drinking range: 2026 - 2038L&S (Nov 2021)

Distinctive for the perfume, lacy texture, aerial profile and finesse, this red features strawberry, cherry, rose, vanilla and spice aromas and flavors. Taut, bordering on racy, with fine harmony and a lingering, graceful finish. Best from 2025 through 2042. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 93 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2023)

(from Les Beaux Bruns, Les Gamaires, Les Fremières, Les Maladières, Derrière le Four and Les Mal Carrées). Ripe and nicely fresh aromas of cherry, cassis and violet are trimmed in subtle though visible wood. There is fine volume and density to the noticeably finer middle weight flavors that are very Chambollesque while exhibiting good power on the youthfully austere finale. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 88-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

From five plots, both below and above the village. 40% whole bunches. Very fragrant, classically Chambolle, violets, nothing of a hot vintage, vibrant, absolutely mouth filling, these are old vines from the 1950s for the most part, with a lovely long pulled out red fruit finish. Very fine indeed. Built on a fruit acid balance more than tannins. This year I find the blend more compelling than the two small bottlings of single vineyard Chambolles. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

A blend of five parcels with some declassified Premier Cru, the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieille Vignes has quite a precocious bouquet with exuberant red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, silky smooth in texture with a finish with echoes of Ghislaine-Barthod. If you like that style, you will like this. Very fine. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months.
