CHARMES CHAMBERTIN

2020 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Well-formed nose with red and black fruit and a little sweet spice. On the palate it feels light on its feet to begin with, then the gourmandise comes slowly with a weight of baking spices and a gorgeous richness. All of a piece and thick and rich to the finish. Drinking range: 2030 - 2042L&S (Nov 2021)

Christophe's vines sit in the highest part of Charmes, across from Chambertin, and his half-hectare is now 53 years old. The wine starts off with smoked meat notes, arguably more Chambertin than Charmes, but the palate turns on the smooth, fluffy tannins typical of Charmes as well as its characteristic, pulsating red fruit flavors. Densely-layered flavors of red raspberries, kirsch and hibiscus ignite the palate. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 97 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

(from a 1.5 ha parcel in Charmes proper). A notably earthier nose of ripe and very fresh wild dark berries displays additional notes of underbrush, smoke and a hint of the sauvage. There is again excellent verve and delineation to the delicious if less sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the complex and lingering finish where the markedly firm supporting tannins are not as fine, though I underscore that they are by no means rustic. Drinking range: 2037 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Right opposite Chambertin. Well-drained clay-limestone soil – shallower than the Mazoyères. 80-year-old vines. Cask sample. At first an immobile portion of sweet red and black fruit, and a touch of blueberry. Then it springs into life, with added spice, driven on by succulent acidity totally in balance with the weight and mass of the wine. The tannins are very fine. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 18 Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Rich deep purple. This has got both muscle and sex appeal. Pretty ripe though on the palate with a couple of slightly cooked notes at the edge. Still sumptuous, still some freshness at the finish, but better picked two days earlier. Needs a little cleaning up, which should happen after racking. Tasted: December 2021 Rating: 92-95 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru just shows a little more of the whole bunch compared to say, the Griottes, though it lends an attractive peppery bass note to the red cherry and strawberry top notes. The oak is nicely integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh, gently building to a slightly creamy-texture, seductive finish. Lovely. Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
