CHÂTEAU ANGLUDET

2020 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Margaux

EN PRIMEUR

Deeply inviting nose is almost pure 'Ribena' fruit. This soft and delicately framed, fruit-led hit follows to the palate. Fruit expression certainly more clear following the family's decision to ferment in concrete and then age 30% in amphorae, with only 30% getting the full New Oak treatment. Nicely ripe but no heaviness this is loaded with charm and plush florality. Red and dark berries, warm from the sunshine. Good flow, good feel and density too - but this is not overly complicated. A charming sweet vein at its core runs right to the end, This seems almost ready to drink, but in fact there's enough stuffing to see it lasting well for 10 to 15 years - a very joyful glass, there is good volume too. Merlot 42%, Cabernet Sauvignon 46% and Petit Verdot 12%.L&S (May 2021)

This has aromas of dried spices, blackberries, cherries, moss, licorice and bark. Savory and harmonious, with a medium body and firm tannins. Excellent balance. Drink from 2025. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2023)

The 2020 Angludet is packed with dark fruit, chocolate, herbs and sweet French oak. Élevage has softened some of the burlier contours that were present en primeur. This forward, juicy Margaux looks like a near and mid-term proposition. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Château Angludet is the product of a crop that suffered frost damage earlier in the season with a reduced percentage of Merlot. It has a lovely nose, maybe not quite as "brisk" as I described out of barrel, yet harmonious with those appealing black fruit laced with iris flower and violet. The palate is medium-bodied, the 30% aging in amphora imparting the spiciness, the liberal dose of black pepper towards the still gritty finish. Lovely length, lovely Margaux, lovely d'Angludet. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Margaux Angludet opens with a burst of super-ripe red fruit, flowers, dried herbs and sweet French oak. Angludet is not an easy wine to taste today. It is at once overt and exotic, but also loses some of its initial exuberance on the mid-palate and finish. Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 88-90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jun 2021)

The 2020 Château Angludet is brisk and precise on the nose of blackberry and bilberry fruit, touches of iodine and pressed flowers coming through with time; there’s wonderful focus and energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. A saline and marine-influenced Margaux, well balanced with a little grittiness toward the finish. Yet overall, this classically styled Angludet has commendable breeding and should give 20 years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2021)

The 2020 Château D'Angludet looks to be outstanding, with beautiful red and blue-tinged fruits as well as notes of dried flowers, sandalwood, and leafy herbs, followed by medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. Offering a layered mid-palate and ripe tannins, it’s just a round, balanced, delicious Margaux that will have 15-20 years of longevity. Rating: 91-93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (May 2021)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 D'Angludet comes skipping out of the glass with cheery, upfront scents of baked blueberries, stewed plums and redcurrant jelly, plus wafts of chocolate box and potpourri. The medium-bodied palate is juicy and refreshing, offering soft tannins and a satisfyingly fruity finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2034 Rating: 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (May 2021)

Deeply fruited bilberry and blackberry, you really get the autumnal hedgerow vibe - well ripened but still with juice. I like this a lot, has character and bite, although the finish is a little spiky. Drinking range: 2026 - 2046 Rating: 91 Jane Anson, Decanter (May 2021)

What I like about Angludet in 2020 is that the front half of the experience is lush and expansive, with tender moments as well as more commanding flavours and then, at the back of the palate, the tannins and acidity both wait patiently for the fruit to do its dance before coming in and closing the door quietly. Perfectly judged, nicely balanced, reassuringly accurate and also downright tasty, this is a lovely wine and it is one of the most delightful forward-drinking, but complete, wines of the year. Winemaker Ben Sichel explained that his Merlot was high in sugar and blessed with balancing acidity. He knew it was critical to preserve freshness in the Merlot and he started picking relatively early on 9th September, waiting patiently before starting on the Cabernet. He started picking Cabernet on 21st September and he finished on the 1st October. This period included some rainy patches which diluted the fruit slightly and also helped it to complete its ripeness. Petit Verdot came in on the 1st October. This measured approach to harvesting guaranteed both the ripeness of the fruit and also the smoothness of the tannins and then Ben vinified his crop softly to achieve depth of flavour without astringency. It is clear that he consummately achieved his aims, underlining just how important it is to have a skillful winemaker with profound viticultural skills in a challenging vintage like this one. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2021)

Deepest crimson with smudgy rim. Lively, fresh aroma with the fruit not the oak to the fore. (No info provided on the oak used, nor on the varietal make-up.) Cassis, blackberry and some red-plum sweetness, which comes through on the palate. Not particularly intense but harmonious, with finely layered dry tannins. Definitely one of the more approachable and digestible Margaux 2020s I have tasted. Hint of chocolate on the finish. Drinking range: 2026 - 2037 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2021)

Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors with licorice and tar. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a long, creamy finish. Best of the trilogy. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2021)

The wine estate of Château Angludet belongs to the Sichel family, wine merchants in Bordeaux for six generations. Situated in the Médoc on gravel deposits from the Garonne, the estate produces excellent wines under the Margaux appellation, which are often put on a par with a Grands Crus Classés in terms of quality.

Please make sure that you have read the terms of this offer which are different from those on the main website. If you are unclear as to what is involved in primeur purchases please do contact our private client team via email or on 020 7018 0187.

Ordering

Prices are all in bond by the case size stated.

Pre-Orders are a firm commitment to buy wines on release, as long as the release price is within the upper and lower price bands set by you on the pre-order form. Pre-orders will be fulfilled subject to availability but providing this firm commitment to buy effectively gives you priority and is a good idea for the most desirable wines.

Wines listed on the website can be ordered in the usual way via the website wishlist order form. You can also send orders directly to our private client team via email. Please note that, for the most sought-after wines, priority will be given to those who ordered the same wines last year and to those that have pre-ordered.

Confirmation

All orders will be confirmed by email and are binding unless written cancellation is received within seven days of email confirmation. Pre-orders are not binding if the release price is above your upper price band.

Invoices are all raised at the in bond price (excluding any duty and VAT) which will become payable at the prevailing rates when the wines arrive in the UK, should you wish to take duty paid delivery.

Payment is required on sight of invoice, by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We regret we cannot accept credit cards for en primeur orders. We reserve the right to apply a dunning charge of 2% per month on invoices unpaid after 30 days.

Delivery

  • Shipment to our bond (at LCB Creek Road) and insurance are included in the in bond price.
  • Delivery is free to Lea and Sandeman / Elephant storage accounts, both duty paid and in bond.
  • Other deliveries (In Bond and Duty Paid) are also free subject to a minimum order from the offer of £500. Orders below this total will be charged an administration and handling fee of £16.50+ VAT when invoices are issued. We will group deliveries and this is a charge for your entire purchases, not a per-case charge.
  • Delivery of 2023 Bordeaux bought en primeur is expected during 2026. Delivery dates may vary as wines are shipped from Bordeaux at different times.

Practical notes - how it works

We start a sale in each customer's name and add all their primeur orders to one sale which is invoiced at the end of the campaign (or when the customer wishes). Immediate payment of invoices is then required by cash, cheque, debit card or bank transfer. We and our customers find that having a single invoice for the vintage is the simpler option but please note that confirmed orders are still binding even if the final invoice has not yet been issued.

Please specify on your wishlist order form where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. If this is to a third-party bonded warehouse, please specify the relevant account details. If the wines are required duty-paid we will issue a second invoice for duty and VAT at the prevailing rate when the wines are available for delivery.

Half-bottles, Magnums and larger bottles.

One of the additional advantages of buying en primeur is being able to order the wine in the format you want. While most of our listings are for 75cl bottles, we can source wines in any format that is offered by the Château. Please note that format requests cannot be changed once wines have been invoiced. Additional charges for special formats do apply and are as follows:-

  • +£18.00 per case of 12 half-bottles
  • +£30.00 per case of 24 half-bottles
  • +£7.50 per case of 3 Magnums (2 bottles equivalent, 1.5 litres each)
  • +£11.00 per case of 6 Magnums
  • +£45.00 per individually boxed Double Magnum (4 bottles equivalent, 3 litres)
  • +£60.00 per individually boxed Imperial (8 bottles equivalent, 6 litres) for Salmanazars, Balthazars, Nebuchadnezzars and Melchiors please enquire for availability and price.
