CORTON CHARLEMAGNE

2020 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Pale primrose. Tremendous concentration and muscularity here but very precise and that stone minerality draws it all back into a very focused, lissom, textured Corton that will be wonderful when its moment comes. Superb. Drinking range: 2025 - 2028L&S (Nov 2021)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Rich and round, this fleshy white displays peach, apple, stone and spicy oak aromas and flavors matched to a vivid structure, with defining acidity and a light tannic feel on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2036. Drinking range: 2025 - 2036 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

from two parcels that total .866 ha in Le Rognet and Le Corton). A cool, restrained and airy nose features notes of mineral reduction, smoked green apple and pretty floral wisps. There is fine density and power to the larger-bodied flavors that possess a caressing if markedly intense flavors that exhibit outstanding depth and persistence. This is an excellent wine that displays first-rate fruit-acid and concentration balance. Drinking range: 2030 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2022)

This wine tends to be one of the last harvested at the domaine, and it always undergoes the longest elevage. This had just undergone a battonage a few days before and Jérôme Flous expected it wouldn't be racked until February. Impressively, it sees 50% new oak, but it is seamlessly blended into this lively wine tasting of lemonade, yellow currants and crushed chalk. This is delightful now, but Jérôme prefers waiting about ten years for the struck flint complexity that starts to show up then. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 95 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has turned out especially well, opening in the glass with aromas of pear, peach, white flowers, freshly baked bread, nutmeg and hazelnuts. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's unusually textural and broad-shouldered for this Ladoix-derived cuvée, displaying bright acids and chalky structuring extract. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

Subtle stony citrus nose. Taut, high-wire freshness. The oak is very gentle so it's the fruit that is highlighted. Has drive and determination rather than richness. But well balanced and well structured. Very long. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Pale lemon colour, a little waxiness, a touch of oak, not so many stones. Then a quiet patch, then the real wine comes out behind with a little lime juice. It is a bit disjointed at this stage in its elevage. This normally turns into a first rate wine, but it is not showing its full potential on today’s form. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is well-defined on the nose with apple blossom, hazelnut and light white chocolate scents. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, quite taut and linear, saline in the mouth. Maybe a bit more weight here would not go amiss, but I appreciate the energy that should hold it in good stead. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
