CORTON

2020 Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

This was the final wine in the run at our Faiveley tasting and it provided a fabulous finish. A little more taut then many of the wines in the run. A good, gentle scrub of tannin underscores a really attractive red berried compote of joy. Quite lithe and sophisticated but there is no denying the easy charm of the fruit at the core here.L&S (Nov 2021)

This aromatic red reveals rose, sandalwood, cherry and spice aromas and flavors, allied to a silky texture. Elegant and juicy, with terrific balance and a superlong, mineral-tinged finish. So polished and stylish, you could enjoy this now, but it will improve over time. ('Hot Wines') Drinking range: 2026 - 2045 Rating: 96 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2023)

This has a brash nose with minerals, North African spices, wild fruits and rose buds. Smooth on the attack, the palate continues the caressing feel with creamy tannins and light extract. This is a highly accessible and thoroughly refined Corton. This is found on the Ladoix side and within Corton Rognets GC. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 95 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

Mingling deep fruit tones evocative of red cherries and plums with notions of loamy soil, licorice, orange rind, rose petals and sweet spices, the 2020 Corton Grand Cru Clos des Cortons Faiveley is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with terrific concentration, tangy acids and a long, saline finish. This is extremely promising. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

Very ripe though again, attractively fresh aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, cassis, the sauvage and a pretty spice nuances, especially anise. The supple and somewhat surprisingly, not especially dense flavors possess a caressing mouthfeel before terminating in a vibrant and sneaky long finish that firms up significantly as it sits on the palate. As always with this ageworthy wine, patience absolutely required. Drinking range: 2037 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Smells of very small tangy dark-red wild berries. Fragrant and laced with vanilla sweetness. Oak is quite marked on the palate, with the tannins thickened by it. But it is full of fruit, the tannins polished. Generous, extremely moreish and balanced for the long term. Drinking range: 2030 - 2045 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

One of the denser deeper darker colours here, and a somewhat brooding nose. There is power in this part of Corton. A miserly 20 hl/ha and 14% alcohol. Some sun-dried cherries alongside the ultra-ripe raspberry in this super-concentrated wine. A little whiff of vanillin behind. Long and substantial. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 93-95 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru has quite a rich and outgoing bouquet, plenty of mulberry fruit here laced with touches of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, quite ripe and slightly confit towards the finish, generous but let’s see how long-term it is. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
