ÉCHEZEAUX

2020 Les Loachausses Grand Cru Domaine Anne Gros

EN PRIMEUR

Not giving much away on the nose (the sample was very cold), but it shows very attractively on the palate with supple firm and harmonious character - fine and fresh. Lovely length and purity. They have really made this one of their wines now - it used to stand apart in character, but now feels completely part of this cellar of delicate, pure finesse. Drinking range: 2030 - 2040L&S (Nov 2021)

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Echézeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Echézeaux. Drinking range: 2023 - 2036 Rating: 95 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

(from a .76 ha parcel, which is about 30% of the total climat). Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, lavender and hoisin lead to impressively rich and solidly voluminous larger-scaled flavors that possess a velvety texture before culminating in a robust, powerful and lingering finish. This is a big Ech that will require at least some patience. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Tank sample. Less violets than chez Lachaux (in 2019), floral; roses with a sprinkling of pepper and Asian spices (star anise). Exotic and assertive. Tapered tannins on the finish, but refined and gentle. Definite gravitas. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 17.5 Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Rich purple but not unduly deep. The fruit is ripe without going too far, dark cherry and raspberry. Very powerful, again with the oak behind. At this stage in its development, I find the fruit a little bit smoothed over. Cheerful but no great finesse at this stage. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 92-94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru is initially bashful on the nose, takes its time to unfurl with light raspberry and blackberry scents entwined with rose petal and sous-bois. The palate is sensual on the entry, silky smooth and very harmonious. Whilst there is enormous depth or grip, this is all about the finesse and purity, its caressing vintage. Just a lovely Echezeaux. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Anne Gros joined her father François at the family domaine in Vosne Romanée in 1988, having given up her arts studies in favour of viticulture and oenology at Beaune and Dijon, and has run the domaine alone since 1995. The Domaine now has 6.5 hectares of Pinot and Chardonnay. Anne describes herself as being 'wary of certainties and keen to preserve her freedom'.

In the vineyards Anne practises viticulture influenced by organic and biodynamic principles, and the vineyards are ploughed and fertilised with compost, but although she believes that the long-term health of the vineyards are best preserved by such methods, she likes to maintain the freedom to use conventional treatments when necessary.

In the cellar, the wines are classically made, in cement tanks for the reds, and stainless steel for the whites. They are then are aged in barrel for up to fifteen months, with 80% new wood for the grand crus, 50% for the village wines and 30% for the regional wines. Anne is quietly meticulous and almost obsessive about cleanliness in her cellar, which perhaps is reflected in the delicacy and restrained tension in her wines, which have aromatic clarity, limpid precision, sheer joie de vivre, lively balance and persistence.
