GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2020 Coeur de Roy Domaine Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

80-110 year-old vines. Super-dark colour. There's even greater depth to this - the nose is seemingly bottomless with dark fruit and spice. The palate is rich, firm, the tannins a little stronger, tightened by the fine acidity, giving a mineral feel which drives it powerfully. Very long.L&S (Nov 2021)

Here, there are three hectares of vines between 50 and 110 years in age. This attentiondemanding wine starts with a sultry, positive touch of reduction then brings on cassis, blackberry and savory spice. The firm tannins and perky acidity give the wine scintillating energy. As with Loïc's Les Evocelles, it is rare to see such exceptional village wines. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033 Rating: 94 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy is a rich, muscular wine, but it's much more elegant and structurally refined than was the case only a few years ago. Offering up aromas of wild berries and plums mingled with dark chocolate, warm spices, black truffles and burning embers, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with striking concentration—old, low-yielding Pinot Fin in top lieux-dits ensures that—and a seamless, complete profile. Rating: 91-93+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(from vines of 50 to 100+ years of age situated in Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise, and Les Marchais; vinified with 50% stems). A super-fresh and distinctly earthy aromas are comprised by notes of cassis and dark berry fruit liqueur. The dense, serious and mouth coating flavors possess a beguiling texture thanks to the abundance of dry extract that also serves to buffer the firm tannic spine shaping the strikingly long finish. This is flat out terrific and it’s rare to see villages-level Gevrey at this level. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Three different parcels – Les Epointures, Combe du Dessus and Les Marchais, next to Lavaut St-Jacques; vines aged 50 to 110 years (70 average). Cask sample. Deep, dark cherry; bright acidity; old-vine concentration – like a chewy fruit jelly; black-fruited, touch of smokiness (from the wood?). Long. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 16.5 Matthew Hayes, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
