GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2020 Le Créot Thibault Liger-Belair Successeurs

EN PRIMEUR

First vintage for Thibault of a decent-sized plot (1.4ha) in this nicely-placed vineyard in the north of the appellation (actually in the commune of Brochon). 10-20cm of fine clay over rocky scree. There's no need for whole bunch here because the the minerality. It's very fine, delicacy in the freshness of the aromas, fine fresh feel in the mouth, nicely lifted; a lovely, sophisticated village wine. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040L&S (Nov 2021)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

Once again the aromas are notably ripe while retaining reasonably good freshness on the notes of poached plum, cassis and warm earth along with a violet top note. The rich and appealingly textured flavors also are relatively refined while terminating in a fleshy, even plump, finish that is also youthfully austere. Drinking range: 2027 - Rating: 88-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

New in 2020, made from purchased grapes on the Brochon side, a light covering of fine clay on limestone scree. No whole bunch in this first vintage. Dark purple with some power. Weighty dark fruit. Dark strawberry with prominent acidity to finish, not quite in balance for me today as there is a light volatility which may well be cleaned up later. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 86-89 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin En Créot is a debut release that is completely de-stemmed that underwent a gentle vinification. It has quite a lively bouquet with red cherries, cranberry and flinty aromas, good tension here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, smooth in texture with a touch of white pepper and bay leaf towards the finish, dessicated orange peel lingering on the aftertaste. Very fine. Drinking range: 2024 - 2044 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
