LATRICIÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2020 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Wow. This is serious. There is a lovely mineral grip up front. A neat channel of well packed fruit emerges. This is less showy though - more muscular and lithe. Great drive and sheer power - there is density here without any heaviness. The tightly wrapped fruit is rich when it comes to the fore red juice has some darker and more brambling notes. Impressive and very promising from barrel.L&S (Nov 2021)

Silky, exuding exotic spices around a core of ripe cherry, pomegranate, raspberry and rose aromas and flavors. Offers a complex and youthful profile that delivers balance and harmony, yet this needs several years to fully express its potential. The aftertaste is seemingly endless and remarkably spicy. Best from 2027 through 2048. Drinking range: 2027 - 2048 Rating: 97 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

This is one of Jérôme Flous' favourites, and its not hard to see why. For one thing, it's harmony in a glass. Everything is in the absolute perfect place. Lightly sweet oak meshes with gorgeously succulent cherries and sweet red plums, and a whiff of incense blends with earthy notes. This whole palate is beautifully lifted by balletic acidity, and the tannins are downright tender. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 96 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

Continuing this site's hot streak, the 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru wafts from the glass with notions of wild berries, peonies, exotic spices, sweet soil tones, espresso roast and bergamot. Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a layered, vibrant core of fruit, concluding with a chalky finish. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(from a large 1.21 ha parcel). An overtly floral-suffused nose speaks of even more restrained notes of black cherry, earth, the sauvage and discreet spice nuances. The sleek, intense, refined and mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess cuts-like-a-knife delineation on the youthfully austere bitter pit fruit-inflected finish. Note that this is quite firm and will need time to both add depth and further flesh out. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Cask sample. Mid cherry. Open, scented, seductively sweet and fresh. Less seductive on the palate, with a slight rubbery note – maybe a touch reductive? The tannins show great finesse even though the whole is extremely embryonic. Chewy, dry, not really ready to taste, let alone drink. Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Medium full purple, this has a lively full raspberry note without exaggeration. There is a just a little bit of white pepper here too, like the Lavaux, but it doesn’t come from whole bunch. This follows through very well on the palate, with great length and perfect balance, and just a touch more fruit volume than the Echezeaux. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 95-98 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the best Faiveley wines on the nose: very good definition and mineralité here, poised and focused, not short-changing anyone in terms of power. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity and grip with a dense and quite weighty finish, yet it manages to maintain finesse. Uncompromising...in a good way. Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
