LE PETIT ROY

2020 Domaine Jean Royer

Colour Red
Origin France, Vin de France

Petit Roy is always made from the off cuts from Jean-Marie Royer's Chateauneuf vineyards and those outside of the appellation. It's a gutsy, full, fragrant red with a delicious compote of clove spiced raspberries, strawberries and plums. A perennial sure-fire hit and the perfect accompaniment to summer barbecues or simply curling up with on a dark wintry night. L&S (Aug 2021)

Tasted at L&S Rhône Tasting - 20/09/2022
Freshly squished handfuls of red berry fruit. It's toward the overripe, really quite powerful and boozy. It's fun and decent value for such exuberant, powerful fruit. Made from the offcuts of Jean-Marie Royer's Châteauneuf blends, this is a kind of baby Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Drinking range: 2022 - 2024 Rating: 88 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Sept 2022)

I often find that French expressions have more potency than English ones when describing certain wines. Le Petit Roy is a feu d’artifice (firework, or better still, pyrotechnic) red wine with so much wonder it takes the breath away. You will already know it is a baby-Châteauneuf-du-Pape of sorts, but this ubiquitous expression loads it with weight and bulk, which it simply doesn’t possess. This is a dark, swarthy and spicy wine stuffed with boysenberry and mulberry tones, but it is fresh, energetic, virile and swaggering on the palate and it will floor you with its charm.Matthew Jukes, Moneyweek (Oct 2021)

Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
