MAZIS CHAMBERTIN

2020 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

The Mazis really impressed in 2020. Its fresh and suave approach on the nose hits the palate with some restraint. Nothing is forced nor big nor bold. A charming, well measured glide across the palate of dark raspberries and pert strawberry flesh. There is a dusty mineral undertow - adding grip and a serious edge. The long finish has a whiff of menthol that excites and lifts once again. Very classy for the vintage.L&S (Nov 2021)

Ripe and packed with cherry and berry fruit, this red is creamy and resonant. Reveals spice, licorice, tobacco, meat and mineral elements as this plays out on the long, spicy finish. What this lacks in concentration it makes up for with finesse and length. Best from 2027 through 2045. Drinking range: 2027 - 2035 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

Exotic, dark and turbo-charged, this wine is wound up with sweet black plums and blackberries, anise and forest floor. It's definitely a wine for those that like bolder, chunkier Pinots, whether you drink it soon or wait a few decades. Speaking of which, Jérôme feels strongly that it is best to wait ten years before trying this wine. For the less patient, I implore you to wait at least six or seven years! Drinking range: 2026 - 2042 Rating: 97 Christy Canterbury MW - TimAtkin.com (Feb 2022)

The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is deep and brooding, unfurling in the glass with aromas of blackberries, peonies, loamy soil and sweet soil tones. Full-bodied, ample and velvety, its concentrated core of fruit is framed by rich, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It's a worthy follow-up to the brilliant 2019. Rating: 93-95+ William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)

(from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the two parcels total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet though still easily perceptible dollop of wood sets off very earthy aromas of various dark berries, humus and old leather. The rich, powerful and seriously concentrated big-bodied flavors possess impressive size, weight and power along with good minerality on the attractively textured and hugely long finale where the only nit is again, a hint of warmth. Drinking range: 2037 - Rating: 92-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Ripe but super-fresh and intense fruit. With a light spicy oak layer. Fresh, pure, moreish, with an elegance I haven't seen so far in this line-up. Long, delicate finish. Drinking range: 2026 - 2038 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2022)

Erwan loves the Mazis this year. The colour is a full mid purple. The nose is a little bit more blockbuster, and certainly the palate offers a stunning raft of fruit built around a very controlled structure. This is a wine for the long term. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 94-96 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is not quite as expressive as the Latricières on the nose with blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, violet and crushed rock scents, the latter becoming more prominent with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, powerful and saturated in style, fleshy but nicely controlled on the finish. This should age very well in bottle - stylish and suave. Drinking range: 2027 - 2050 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2021)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
