NUITS SAINT GEORGES

2020 Charmotte Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

EN PRIMEUR

On the north side of the combe which cuts into the hillside above Nuits, a vineyard with 40-50cm of clay over the rock. Thibault put 40% of whole bunches into this. A very Vosne-side style here, a wine all in silk and elegance - indeed showing almost more like Chambolle than Vosne. The mineral takes it's time to surface through the concentrated 2020 fruit, but it does - very fine. Drinking range: 2027 - 2037L&S (Nov 2021)

* This is a pre-shipment/primeur offer. All orders are accepted under the TERMS of this offer which differ from the terms of the rest of the site.

A very ripe but notably fresher nose offers up its notes of poached plum, cassis, black raspberry and earth. There is both good volume and succulent to the delicious and velvety but quite punchy flavors that also display fine length on the refreshing is slightly rustic finale. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 87-90 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2022)

Rich complex purple. An all-enveloping rich raspberry fruit, significant power behind, fortunately good acidity as well, all in plush red fruit, some tannins behind. Plenty to enjoy here, rich but neither cooked nor over alcoholic at 13.5%. 40% whole bunches aid the freshness. Tasted: November 2021 Rating: 90-92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Jan 2022)

Containing 40% whole cluster, the 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges La Charmotte comes from the north of the appellation. This feels quite candied on the nose, a little savory in style with fresh mint developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, lightly spiced with veins of dark chocolate towards the finish. Fine. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2021)

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
