BULLES DE SYRAH

Brut Jean-Louis Denois

Grapes Syrah
Colour White
Origin France
ABV 11.7%

A new Blanc de Noirs joins our range of French Sparklers, this is cracking. Pure Syrah (Shiraz) vinified white. There is a lovely weight and full feel in the mouth - but a beautiful freshness too. It should not be a surprise but there is a remarkable 'Syrahness' to this - which is fascinating and moreish. Beautifully balanced and much more than just a 'curio' this is delicious drinking, highly recommended, especially if you are after something - just a little different. L&S (Nov 2013)

A Limoux fizz but with a few twists. Made by Champenois, this is a 100% Syrah vinified as a white with no dosage added. The result is a wine of incredible texture and weight, supported by great freshness. If you are after something different, then this will not disappoint. (Decanter Weekday Wines) Rating: 91 Decanter Magazine (Oct 2014)

According to one of the Lea & Sandeman team, the last thing they needed was another sparkling wine, but they couldn't resist a traditional-method Blanc de Noirs made from Syrah grown in the wilds of Fenouillèdes. It couldn't be further removed from Australian sparkling red Shiraz in style, but it's not quite like anything else either: there's a minerality that recalls Champagne but the juicy, red-berry Syrah flavours are as maverick as the winemaker Jean-Louis Denois. Jean-Louis Denois

The South of France is not the most obvious place to look for good sparkling wine, but the vineyards of Limoux have been making fizz since long before the Champenois. Jean-Louis Denois, originally from Champagne, spotted the potential of the Limoux terroir and moved to the region. He was not, however, a fan of Mauzac – the grape variety behind the region's speciality, Blanquette de Limoux – and ripped out the vines, replacing them with the more familiar Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Despite being such a long way south, the clay and limestone vineyards are at altitude (200 to 400 metres) helping to retain the freshness required for sparkling wine production. A busy character, Jean-Louis studied in Beaune and worked in wineries in California, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa before finding his calling in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
