Our friends at Langham have really dug down into the detail of their vineyards to create a couple of fascinating new cuvées. This is the Culver and it promotes the Pinots (66% Noir & 24% Meunier) and as a result you get a fuller red fruit aspect. Wild flowers, hawthorn, cherry and wild strawberry, but still with a bright ripe citrus acidity. It fills the mouth with flavour but never overwhelms, it would be a great match for lobster, trout and scallops. 10% Chardonnay makes up the blend, mostly from the 2017 vintage. L&S (Apr 2020)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

Broader and satisfying – fizz for food? A bit looser-textured than the Corallian but a good contrast. 12% Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2023)

Another exquisite wine by this fantastic English estate. Based on the 2019 vintage this smells like a plate of buttered toast in an English country garden and tastes of soft red apples, toasted hazelnuts and lemon shortbread. Langham is once again doing our little green isle proud. L&S (Mar 2022)

59% Pinot Noir, 36% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Meunier, and is made from 82% base wine from 2019 and 18% reserve wine. Bottled 13 August 2020. Disgorged 3 March 2023. Dosage 2 g/l. An interesting nose on this bold, savoury wine – like hops flowers. Distinctly salty, almost meaty, this is almost more wine-like than fizz-like. Blood orange and hawthorn berries traced with iodine and into a crunchy, salt-crusted-samphire finish. Tiny, tense bubbles. There is something about the way the wine tastes, feels and moves that I associate with a spontaneously fermented wine with very low sulphite additions, but I may be wrong. Either way, it's dense, chewy, tangy and full of character. A very serious rosé for the dinner table, not for receptions. (TC) 12% Drink 2023 – 2027 Drinking range: 2023 - 2027 Rating: 17 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2023)

Langham Estate

Langham Estate is proudly independent and grow all their own grapes giving them total control and the ability to produce exactly the wines they want. With a south-facing aspect, chalk soils and a unique micro-climate, Langham's 'Crawthorne' Vineyard provides the perfect terroir for ripening the classic Champagne varieties – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

The viticulture here is the latest development in agriculture at this historic, farming estate with established hedgerows and mature woodland providing natural wind breaks and habitat for a large variety of beneficial organisms.

This great Vineyard potential was identified by John Langham and now under his son Justin the work is being intensified and the number of vines has increased to more than 30 acres.

They work with a low-intervention approach to both grape growing and wine production, constantly striving to minimise our environmental impact and produce honest wines that reflect their Dorset terroir.

All grapes are handpicked, and rigorous vineyard selection ensures only the highest quality grapes arrive at the winery.

Vineyard manager Olly Whitfield tends the 'holy trinity' of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with different vine management techniques for each variety. This maximises the benefits of the south facing aspect and chalk heavy soils that results in wines with great structure and finesse.

In the cellar, head winemaker Tommy Grimshaw utilizes a variety of ex Burgundy, Bordeaux and Champagne barrels – along with stainless steel to give as many blending fragments as possible, which are separated by press load. Each fragment of base wine goes through spontaneous, wild fermentation and none are fined or filtered. Creating complex and interesting base wines is at the heart of what Langham Estate does, reducing reliance on longer lees aging and bringing wines to the market earlier at a competitive cost price.

The results are impressive - this super wine represents unusually good value for the immense quality.

Awarded Sparkling Wine Producer of the Year 2020 by the IWSC competition and winning an array of medals: Gold for Blanc de Blancs 2015 & silver for Culver, Corallian, Pinot Meunier & Rosé.
