A fascinating result at this well respected competition, Pommery was awarded top honours in the 2015 Champagne Masters tasting beating Laurent-Perrier, Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot and more. The tasting here is done blind by 8 independent panelists - 4 of whom are MWs and the others all serious wine-trade experts. They note that Pommery stood out above other brands to come top of the table in arguably the most competitive category, £30-£40 Brut NV. L&S (Nov 2015)

The other top scoring category in the Brut NV sector was Pommery Brut Royal, attesting to the skill of long-serving cellar master Thierry Gasco, who has looked after winemaking at the house for more than 23 years. Almost as high scoring were the Brut NVs from Lanson, Veuve-Clicquot and Laurent-Perrier.. Top Place at the Annual Champagne Masters Tasting. The Drinks Business (Nov 2015)

(L51149) Light gold with a frothy mousse Smoky, truffle-laced orange and pear aromas, with hints of white pepper and sweet butter; nicely complex for a non-vintage brut bottling. Medium in weight, with a chewy texture and fresh, tangy apple and pear flavors. Finishes clean and spicy, with good lift from vibrant acidity. Rating: 87 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Nov 2006)

Fresh apple, lime, orange oil and spice on the nose. Bright and brisk, with apple and lime flavors accented by a mineral nuance. A bit youthfully raw and one-dimensional but refreshing and reasonably intense. Finishes with a flavor of green apple and decent persistence. Rating: 87 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Nov 2003)

Pommery

Alexandre Pommery made his fortune in the wool business and was content to sit back and enjoy his success when his wife, Louise, announced that at the age of 38 that she was pregnant. To support this unexpected baby Alexandre decided to go back into business but, with the wool trade in some decline, opted to concentrate on wine. In 1858, with his daughter not even a year old, Alexandre Pommery died and the nascent company fell into his widow’s hands. Far from floundering, the company flourished under the young widow and then, after her death in 1890, under her two children Louis and Louise Pommery.

In the 1860’s, Madame Pommery decided to utilise the Gallo-Roman chalk quarries under the estate and turn them into cellars, something copied across the region. She also initiated the construction of the extraordinary Neo-Elizabethan Gothic house and cellars that stand to this day. At a time when most Champagne was sweet, Pommery perfected the first vintage Brut Champagne in 1874 paving the way for Champagne as we know it today. Champagne Pommery are based in Reims.
