Prelude is the culmination of Taittinger's desire to produce a Grand Cru blend, on par with Vintage Champagne. A 50/50 blend of Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs and Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims, it is made to the elegant house style. A brilliant pale yellow with silvery highlights, its bubbles form a lasting, delicate creamy mousse whilst subtle, fresh floral aromas of elderflower with slightly spicy overtones follow through to an initial fresh, citrus palate, finishing long and rich with hints of peach. (a 50-50% chardonnay-pinot noir blend made from the first pressing and aged for more than 5 years on the lees; 300 cases of 6, SRP $70). This stylish effort offers excellent aromatic complexity with its expressive nose of brioche, pear and floral elements. There is good crispness to the delicious flavors that are supported by an admirably fine mousse as well as the excellent finish depth and length that one would reasonably expect from grand cru fruit. This could be enjoyed now or held for a few more years if you prefer more mature flavors. A lovely effort. Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com
