Beaujolais

The hills of the Beaujolais are practically a monoculture of Gamay grapes. Mostly excluded from Burgundy, to the north, here the Gamay thrives and, occasionally, delivers wines of some class. The ubiquity of Beaujolais Nouveau perhaps does the region’s image a disservice, but it is the joyously fruity style of young Beaujolais that defines the wine. Lovely with simple suppers or lightly chilled.

Beyond simple fruity Beaujolais, there are the richer classier wines of the ten Beaujolais “crus” – villages with reputations and appellations of their own. Probably the most well-known is Fleurie, but all are worth trying. Still light with fruit emphasis in youth, the best cru wines have some ability to age.
