Much early success was down to the popularity of Chilean Merlot. So it was somewhat awkward when ampelographers discovered that much of Chile’s Merlot was, in fact, a somewhat obscure old Bordelais grape variety called Carménère. Turning adversity into opportunity, the Chileans have embraced their Carménère and turned it into their own totemic grape variety.
