Podere Luigi Einaudi
Firmly established as one of Dogliani's leading estates, Giorgio Ruffo (married to Paola Einaudi) continues to produce quite outstanding Dolcettos in a class well above any others we have tasted, and outstanding Barolos which are among the finest and most elegant of the region. Robert Parker recently wrote: ' Consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola has been instrumental in ratcheting up the quality at this historic property. I can't think of too many estates that have made such significant strides in just the last few years.'

Deep cherry fruit and a touch of oak dominate this firm but very drinkable Dolcetto.

The Cannubi 2004 is perhaps even more promising. Richer and more full bodied than the Costa Grimaldi, this has the power and structure that makes the Cannubi vineyard so famous, with soft and sweet tannins giving a very long finish. Less immediately approachable and another wine for drinking over two decades.

Magnums
Einaudi’s famous Costa Grimaldi Barolo is a selection made only in the best vintages and aged in large ‘botte’. This is a more open-knit style of Barolo that drinks in its early stages as well as ageing well, especially in such a great vintage as 1997. A touch lighter in colour that the Cannubi, the Costa Grimaldi has very fine structure with lovely fruit, bitter-sweet flavours and very good length. It is immensely elegant.
